About Our Family

Mike and Becky have both been involved in the Hereford business nearly all their lives beginning in Ohio (Mike) and Illinois (Becky). The current herd began in the mid-1970’s in Kansas City, Mo., when Mike and a co-worker purchased a few commercial and registered Polled Hereford cows. He and Becky began developing their own separate herd after their marriage in 1976 and moved it

to Iowa in 1979. Sons Travis and Kevin received their first commercial cows for Christmas in 1983 and soon moved to purebred Polled Herefords. During their growing-up years they enjoyed success showing at state, regional and national shows. Travis still has a few cows in the herd that have bloodlines tracing back to a heifer he purchased as a junior in the 1995 Iowa Beef Expo sale from Jim Hemmingsen. He is involved in our breeding decisions and marketing as well as the hands-on maintenance of the farm and herd. Kevin and Lindsay and their son live in Thermopolis, Wyoming. Kevin helps market our cattle to western cattlemen as the head of our unofficial “Simpson West” branch, which has resulted in expanding our customer base. About Our Herd

Our small but select herd has been developed with performance as the top priority. Our main focus is on calving ease, low birth weights and high growth and milk traits. Whether natural service or AI, the sires we breed our cows to are selected primarily for those traits along with an emphasis on phenotype and structural correctness. As a result, the bulls we sell from each year's calf crop consistently rank in the top 30% or better for nearly all performance traits and are measured with genomically-enhanced EPD's. We continuously collect extensive data throughout every phase of growth on all the cattle raised on our farm from birth until when they leave the farm. We retain ownership and collect harvest data of our steers through the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity cooperative. We also strive to offer homozygous polled bloodlines which are in demand from our commercial customers. After losing a longtime leased summer pasture, we reduced our herd in the spring of 2019 from calving around 20 females to now calving around 10 females plus retaining replacement heifers. We are proud to be a Gold TPR breeder and to have several Dams of Distinction in our bloodlines.

This is Becky's first Birthday in quite some time that didn't entail maternity ward detail. Happy Birthday Becky Kidwell Simpson.

In November 2012 a young couple wanting to start a Polled Hereford herd came to look at our heifer calves and went home with two of them. Three months later they returned for two more and came back in the fall for another three. In the intervening years, we became mentors and more importantly, friends, as they grew their herd from these foundation females. With the exception of one cow, their current herd consists of descendants of those first seven heifers, with the oldest being the first calf born from the original purchase. With such a concentration of our genetics, it wasn’t until now that we were able to offer them an outcross bull – yesterday we delivered our herd sire, “Keo” (bred by Goehring Herefords) to Andrew and Brandy Johnson, Woodburn, Iowa. Thank you for your continued support of our program and genetics – we look forward to seeing him work for you.

After 50+ years of breeding Polled Hereford cattle, today was the final chapter of our program as our herd's new owners picked up our Gold TPR herd of bred cows and 2024 heifer calves. We thank the Franzkowiak family for their confidence in our breeding program and genetics as they re-start their registered Hereford herd. We are grateful to see our cattle continue on with a great family that will care for them and use them as the foundation to grow their Hereford herd. You may even see some of their calves in a showring in the near future!

We would also like to thank all of our customers over the years for your business. We strived to breed cattle that are easy calving with high growth and carcass merit. We had several repeat customers who would come back for another bull or female again which gave us satisfaction that we were accomplishing our breeding goals of producing cattle that other cattle programs were having success with.

As Becky's father, a lifelong Herford breeder, always said "You meet the best people through cattle." We have made a lot of great friends through cattle over the years that we will continue to keep in touch with. Our best wishes to Nick, Sarah, Kate, Evie, Lily, and Hazel Franzkowiak and we look forward to following your new journey with the group of females you took home today.

We are a little late posting some pictures we've taken from this spring through pasture turnout a few weeks ago. We are thankful for the much needed rains that have made some lush pastures and a good 1st cutting of hay. We are in the process of getting updated photos of all our cows, but in the meantime we'll sneak in a few in this photo drop.

We have 2 steer prospects for sale. Sired by Cuda and our Perfecto 84F bull. They are eligible for the Iowa Hereford Steer Futurity and Junior National Hereford Expo. More information and pedigree links are available on our website. Call or email us for current info and pricing. Both are are growthy individuals that had too high birthweights to meet our criteria for keeping as bulls but would make great youth show projects.
