Established in 2003, Willow Homestead raises registered Shetland Sheep, NASSA flock #1090. Shetlands are known for their superior wool quality in a wide range of colors. They are a primitive, short-tailed breed, small in body, excellent mothers with gentle personalities and, overall, very hardy animals. Raw fleece, roving and yarn for sale upon request.

Scout had twin ram lambs this morning! Throughout the delivery, Scout’s sister, Lorelei (the white-nosed ewe with horns), was keenly interested as was Scout’s lamb from last spring (the smaller black ewe). Maternal instincts are often strong in Shetlands and overly excited ewes can steal the lambs. I’m glad there was a fence line! Scout and her boys are now snug in the barn, under supervision for a few days, but doing just fine. ♥️🐑♥️

I feel like EVERY year I’m gushing about the crazy shedding of our curly horse! But here I go again 🤪 if you notice the light brown stripe that runs down Charlie’s backbone, that is fully brushed out. Eventually he will look like that all over. But there’s just a liiiiittle bit more to go…

Yesterday was 48* and dry. This morning we have snow piled on the sheep’s backs. Rock on, Wisconsin! 🤘🐑♥️

This is our boxelder tree out in the middle of the ewe’s pasture. Twenty-five years ago the trunk was about 10” in diameter, and that metal fence post wasn’t embedded. A testament to perseverance and dogged determination.

The breeding season is over! And it was sure an adventure this year! The rams who were kept back searched for the weakest sections of woven wire, and more than one morning I found boys in pastures they shouldn’t have been. It was an ongoing game of wrestling rams back to the right paddock and patching holes with wire and twine. But at the end of the day, no one was injured (although a lot of bashing happened when I wasn’t looking) and Clyde successfully wooed the ladies. On the list for this Summer, new fence lines!
