Last year as we were working on our big deployment, we gathered inputs from around our property to use to build the hugels, including this downed tree. Using native materials is an important part of preserving your soil’s natural ecology. It may not seem like a big deal to bring in fillers and inputs from other areas, but it can disrupt the natural flow of things in your local soil food web. Of course, there are times when it’s just not possible to avoid bringing in outside fillers and inputs. Do what you can with what you’ve got.

We brew our own compost tea on the farm every week made from our own compost to use as fertilizer on our plants. As we first started transitioning into permaculture farming techniques, we looked at how much money we were spending on all of our inputs. We quickly realized how much we were spending on bottled nutrients and saw that this was an area we could conserve both funds and the environment. So we researched the ins-and-outs of making compost for brewing compost tea. This switch to compost tea made both our plants AND our bottom line happy. Spending a little extra time and effort to make our own fertilizer has been an excellent investment.

With the stretch of good weather we have had, things are starting to progress on the farm. Finally!🎉 We have some poles going in, and can start to do the trenching to bring electric to our structures. This is going to eliminate all generator use, while still having our solar arrays for back up. All energy produced will be fed back to the grid to help lower costs and reduce the carbon footprint. We are excited about how much this will free up our time, and let us focus on what we love. Producing an even better product! The last couple years have been a struggle getting all the paperwork in order, and investing in infrastructure. Our production took a big hit over that time, but we are in this for the long haul. We will be back on track this year, and stoked to focus on farming!

Water is necessary for life. Water usage affects everyone in both present and future generations. Part of being a good steward of the land is being mindful of the water sources in your area. Here in Humboldt County, our farm is part of the Eel River Watershed. We work to do our part to preserve our watershed. If everyone draws just a little more than their share, the whole ecology suffers. If everyone conserves water, everyone benefits.

It’s been quite the process of jumping through all the hoops of the new legal market. We constantly find ourselves facing catch 22’s that would try the patience of even the most patient of saints. One of the things that helps keep us going is obtaining a yield. That doesn’t always mean harvesting a bumper crop (of course that is always great!). Sometimes obtaining a yield is about connecting with others. Sharing knowledge. Benefiting from others’ experience. It’s always great to connect with like-minded people like from . Throwback to summertime and general daily work with the plants. There’s a lot that goes into regular care of these giants. Checking for pests, trimming back sun leaves, looking for signs of underwatering/overwatering, and just making sure everyone is healthy and happy and growing. The third principle of permaculture is to obtain a yield. It really is one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of farming. There’s just nothing that compares to walking among your plants, inhaling the rich terpenes, and feeling like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself and your daily stresses and worries. A great time was had by all last night at the SoHum sesh, and seed swap put together by , and . Big thanks to for sharing his space, and being a gracious host. I’m fired up to see what we can find out of some of the genetics we swapped. Thank you to with for the Goji, and for the crazy crosses! These are amazing farmers dedicated to their craft. Also, I finally got my hands on the ! It was great hanging with old friends and making new. I love this
