Sundown Farms

Sundown Farms We are a small family farm ready to serve you thru our beef, pork, hay, and crop production! Thanks for visiting and enjoy following along on our family farm!

My parents, Dan and Jackie Downey, bought the 23 acres we live on in 1993 when I was about six months old. We have been raising a small herd of Scottish Highland Beefers ever since 1995 and have grown our farm since then. Please feel free to ask any questions related to agriculture, as this page is an effort to educate others about this great, integral industry. If I don't know the answer I will try to refer you to a source that does! James Downey

To finish up May Beef Month yesterday we welcomed our newest calf!
The first time mother Two Dozen calved flawlessly on her own at 3 pm or so. Our boys named her bull calf Kristoff! Can you tell we are on a frozen theme here?

We are using up eartags we had hence the two different numbers. Kristoff was up and nursing quickly and we dipped his navel to limit infection risk.

We have one more heifer to calve here in June then we will fall calve in September and October!

My cousin Ellie led the riderless horse in the Manitowoc Memorial Day Parade today. Junebug the horse did an excellent job as did Ellie.

The saddle is purposely put on backwards and there is a pair of boots backwards in the stirrups which all signify a fallen soldier.

Our freedom has been and continues to be paid for by our brave soldiers who have laid down their lives for our country.
Thank you to all those who gave all for you and me!

Here's an update from Sundown Farms!

Even with record precipitation in April and chilly temps the fields dried out very quickly.
That means its time to get planting!
Our friend Garrett plants our soybeans and corn. The trailer behind the truck is called a seed tender and allows us to quickly fill the planter with seed so we can keep moving.

Today's rain was just a little bit so we will keep working ground tomorrow. Hoping to finish up beans and then plant our corn and new seeding by end of the weekend!

This is a crazy but exciting time of year! We have high hopes for an excellent weather and market year.
Special thanks to all who help get it done!

Our farm is right along the Manitowoc River. With all this rain some of our land is completely submerged. Crazy to see this in April instead of March like most years!

These particular fields shown are where we make marsh grass. Its actually beneficial for the marshes to flood well and then for the water to quickly recede so the grass grows well. Hopefully the water goes down and the grass takes off ASAP!

We love to prepare our home raised food right from our freezer!
Last night we dined on Asian Beef Ribs, rice and home canned peaches.
The grass fed grass finished ribs were fork tender after just a couple hours in the slow cooker!
Just cant beat the meaty, beefy flavor of beef ribs!

7 days ago right now we found a surprise in our winter lot!

One of our heifers Ana had her first calf! We were not expecting any calves until June and you can see the wet conditions were not ideal.
Thankfully it was a nice sunny day with no wind.
Ana calved on her own and is doing an excellent job mothering her bull calf. Our son Westley named the calf Olaf!

Special thank you and shout out to my wife for taking total care of the newborn calf as I had to leave immediately to get to work. Kaitlin dipped Olaf's navel, dried him off well and made sure he was nursing.
That evening I took the pair behind our barn on concrete lot to escape the mud. They are both doing well and have plenty of dry bedding and feed! Olaf is now running so fast he is difficult to catch.
What an excellent surprise to find last week.

We cant wait for fresh grass and drier conditions to get the herd grazing again!

We hope you all had an excellent Easter!
We sure did with our growing crew.
What a beautiful celebration of our Lord's resurrection and victory.
Can't beat the family time on Easter too!
