I am the first generation of my family to do this.

Neither my husband nor I came from a farming tradition. I grew up on a farm in Upstate New York, and that experience was enough to instill in me a love for the land, hard work and doing things with my own hands.

Today, I garden, can, sew, and raise animals. I try to carry forward the skills and I hope to pass them on to the next generation.

We have three children, nine grandchildren and now three great-grandchildren. I do not know whether one of them will choose to take over the farm someday, but I hope someone will.

Because this farm is about more than what we have built. It is about keeping the knowledge, traditions and movement toward real food going for another generation.
