Unfortunately Winged Spur Farm will not attend the Mount Pleasant or the Big Rapids Farmer's Markets this year. John is suffering health problems. He plans on returning next year. Meanwhile we still have chickens and will be selling eggs. We will deliver eggs to the Mount Pleasant Thursday Market through Udder Bliss. Sorry all chicken eggs come from a hen chicken. I've had people not wanting to buy white eggs because "they come from the store." They wanted brown eggs because "they come from a farm." Go figure.

When shopping for chicken eggs at a Michigan farmers market, you might see eggs that are white, brown, or even blue! You may wonder if one type of egg is better for sweet or savory dishes, or whether it's best to enjoy a certain color boiled or baked.

According to our friends at MSU Extension, "The hen’s genetics and breeding determines the shell color of eggs. The shell color does not control the content of the egg. Eggs may be different on the outside but there is no difference in flavor or nutrition, or how one might consume them."

Enjoy eggs of all colors of the rainbow safely by keeping them refrigerated and consuming them within three weeks of purchase.

I just read we should have above normal precipitation this summer. Yet we received less than inch of rain in May. Maybe with rain our cactus will bloom. 🤔 ☀️

My new baby Rusdian Orloffs from Sandhill Preservation Center arrived and have been enjoying their brooder. I got 18, a few extra. Great place for poultry and heirloom seeds and more.

Finished the new beds with Veggie Doo from Morgan Composting in my hoophouse. After soaking them down they will be home to tomatoes and basil. The walkways will be covered in woodchips. The beds were built on soaking wet cardboard to help check the weeds.

Winged Spur Farm

My wife Mary and I, John, started Winged Spur Farm after moving back to Michigan in January 2018. We had been living in Nebraska for 16 years. We started a small farm in Nebraska and wanted to do the same here in Michigan. We purchased 10 acres with a small home on it north of Remus, Michigan and started the farm in the spring of 2018.

In our first year we started working the land, doubled our crop space in 2019 and are adding more in 2020. We had raised chickens and ducks in Nebraska, so we had to have them in Michigan. We started with a new flock of egg layers. All of our chickens are heritage breeds laying large and extra-large brown eggs. Our ducks are pretty prolific layers as well.

We have started a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program here at the farm. We currently have 3 shares available for 2020. This won’t be a typical CSA. You buy a share which becomes an account. You place an order from available produce and/or eggs and we subtract the order amount from your balance. You only order the weeks you select. Going on vacation, no problem. We sell popular produce like tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, potatoes, salad greens and more produce you probably buy now. PM us for more information.

We sold produce at the Big Rapids (Tuesday), Mt. Pleasant (Thursday) and Chippewa Lake farmers’ market in 2019. Currently we plan selling at the Big Rapids (Tuesday), Mt. Pleasant (Thursday) and Mt. Pleasant (Saturday).
