Marlee Graf had a new and sad experience today. But it is all part of raising show pigs. Most won’t talk about this part of it. Today on the farrowing list is a gilt we leased out for last winter. She was a nice gilt and we bred her when we got her back. When she started farrowing she was having trouble. When Marlee sleeved her she realized her pelvis was too small to get the pigs out of. Now for the some things just happen for a reason. The sow in the crate next to her was not due until Saturday. But that sow started to farrow when this one was having trouble, so we were able to perform a c section on the one having trouble. We were able to save several pigs out of her. Now Marlee is probably my most sensitive and caring girl and she was pretty sad about what we needed to do but I explained we would sacrifice the gilts life to save several babies. She understood why we were doing it. As soon as I cut in and started pulling pigs out Marlee jumped right in and started drying off pigs. Her legs were covered in blood when she was done and then she was cuddling the babies. She took them right in to the other sow and got them nursing. Sometimes it’s all rainbows and lollipops in the pig barn. Sometimes it’s not. What I do know is things like this will help her appreciate everything she ever does when she shows her pigs.

Got a text from Marlee late morning that said. “Hey dad I forgot to text you that the hamp sow due today started farrowing. But she is done now and has passed her afterbirth and I gave her oxy. I also induced the gilt due tomorrow. So I’m going to go back in the house”. She has all the confidence in the farrowing house. Pretty proud of her. She sure makes it easy. All I had to do was help her process her litter from yesterday and the one from today.

Marlee is doing something this summer we used to do all the time as a kid. She bred some of her hamp sows to yorks and crosses to do something different for her. She was so excited last night when this one started farrowing! And I’m proud of her, she sat out there and farrowed her all on her own except for Maddie’s one trip out to show her how to flip one over that’s upside down in the birth canal. Beth and I just sat on the porch getting updates from her through texts. She told me how big they were and when I seen them this morning she was right. So I helped her process them. This is truly Marlee’s project. I just pay feed bills and help her breed(but she does most of that on her own also). Glad we made it fun again to raise and show pigs in the Graf household.
