On this Earth Day 2026, let’s talk some more about mowing less this spring… and all year.

Bees need more than the typical lawn w**d flowers. Go beyond mowing less in spring and create a “bee lawn” by including beneficial flowering species in your lawn. This can include white clover (Trifolium repens) and other attractive low-growing flowering plants such as creeping thyme (Thymus spp.), selfheal (Prunella vulgaris), and others.

Some plants, such as native violets (Viola spp.), may already be present and should be encouraged as they are valuable host plants for fritillary butterflies.

🐝Year-Round Side Benefits of Mowing Less
• It saves water while increasing drought tolerance: taller grass has deeper roots and less water evaporates from the soil.
• Reduce air and noise pollution from gas-powered lawn equipment.
• Better conditions for other invertebrates like lacewings and fireflies; they prefer longer grass.
• Save time and money.

🐝More Ways to Participate in Low Mow Spring
1. Set the mower blade a few inches higher to protect lower flowering plants.

📌Did you know?
A higher blade setting is shown to improve grass health by increasing water retention and keeping the soil cooler, especially in summer months.

2. Participate in one month of No Mow. For our area, May might be a great month to not mow.
3. Avoid pesticide and herbicide use! Pesticides are often deadly to pollinators of all kinds, and herbicides reduce food sources by removing flowers in the landscape.

Let’s show the pollinators and Earth a little more love!

The 2026 lambing season is in full swing! Four out of our seven Shetland ewes have delivered beautiful, healthy babies.

So far, the count is 2 rams and 3 ewes. Yes, that means there was a set of twins.

This is good information to help the pollinators and other beneficial insects!

Have you heard about Low Mow Spring? It’s a catchy name for a movement that is helping us understand how lawns are shared with many vitally important small creatures. 🐝

📌The Truth About Lawns
When we think of habitat loss, we usually imagine bulldozers and stripped forests. But acres of manicured lawn are just as much a loss of habitat.

According to NASA, lawns cover 40 million acres, or 2%, of land in the US, making them the single largest irrigated crop! Lawns are mowed, fertilized, chemically treated, and watered, taking up a lot of precious time, money, and other resources.

Lawns provide little benefit to wildlife and are often harmful. Grass-only lawns lack healthy floral resources and nesting sites for bees and are often treated with pesticides that harm bees and other invertebrates.

If 10% of lawns in the US were replaced with pollinator-friendly native plants, we would add 4 million acres of pollinator habitat. Think about that number for a minute. 4 million acres.

📌Why Mow Less in Spring
We need to rethink the manicured American lawn! Every small change, from mowing less to transitioning your lawn into a more naturally diverse food source landscape, can make a big difference.

The start of the growing season is a critical time for hungry, newly emerged, native bees. Flowers can be hard to find. By allowing the lawn to grow longer and letting flowers bloom, your lawn can provide nectar and pollen to help your bee neighbors thrive.

Did You Know?
Being low in protein, Dandelions aren’t a good food source for bees.

Mowing less creates habitat and can increase the abundance and diversity of wildlife, including bees and other pollinators.

Mowing every two or three weeks can increase the number of blooms to provide valuable bee food. Several studies show that reduced mowing also helps butterflies and many other beneficial insects. 🦋

And think about how many more hours per month you will have to spend with family and friends. It’s a win-win scenario for everyone! 💚

I'm a day late posting this. Facebook was not working when we were online yesterday.

CHILI MAC N’ CHEESE
With the smokiness of paprika, the spice of chili, and the comfort-food creaminess of mac and cheese, this dish is the ultimate camp meal. And uses only one pot! If you don’t like kidney beans (raising my hand), substitute with your favorite.

1 Tablespoon fat
1 onion, diced
½ pound ground beef or plant-based ground
2 Tablespoons tomato paste
2 Tablespoons chili powder
½ Tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon sea salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
8 oz. elbow pasta
1 (14.5 oz.) can kidney beans, drained
1 ½ cup beef or vegetable broth
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

1. In a Dutch oven or other large pot with a lid, heat the fat over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent, 3-5 minutes.
2. Add the ground beef, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and salt. Using your spoon or spatula, break apart the meat and stir to coat with the tomato paste and spices. Once browned, add the garlic and sauté for 30-60 seconds.
3. Add the pasta, kidney beans, and broth and stir. Cover with the lid and cook for 5-6 minutes or until done.
4. Remove the lid and stir in the cheese.
5. Serve with your favorite chili toppings like minced red onion, jalapeno, scallions, etc.

Today is the spring equinox, a day all gardeners look forward to!

In our northern mountain climate (zone 4/5), we still experience freezes and frosts, but we know the soil is warming, days are getting longer, and we will soon see the results of our seed starting efforts.

Which spring flower are YOU most looking forward to?

Camping at the ranch opens in 14 days!

How is your camping menu comin' along? Here is another classic skillet meal to consider.

SLOPPY JOES
Fast, simple, and packed with homemade flavor, this hearty meal is perfect at camp or back home.

Make the Filling at Home:
1 Tablespoon fat
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tablespoons tomato paste
½ cup ketchup
1 Tablespoon mustard
1 Tablespoon pure maple syrup
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon sea salt
1. In a medium pot, heat the fat over medium heat; add the ground beef and brown, breaking it up with a spatula.
2. Add the onion and sauté until soft, about 3-4 minutes. Add the tomato paste and sauté for a couple minutes. Then add the garlic for one minute more.
3. Stir in the ketchup, mustard, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire, chili powder, and salt. Simmer until the sauce slightly thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
4. Transfer the filling to a storage container with a sealable lid. Store in the refrigerator or your cooler for up to four days.

AT CAMP:
Premade mixture
1 small can diced green chiles
¾ cup shredded jack cheese
Burger or slider buns
Reheat the mixture in a pot. Add in the can of green chiles and a little water and heat. Then mix in the cheese and heat until it begins to melt. Serve inside burger or slider buns.
Makes enough for 4 full-sized sandwiches or 6 sliders.
