This is good information to help the pollinators and other beneficial insects!
Have you heard about Low Mow Spring? It’s a catchy name for a movement that is helping us understand how lawns are shared with many vitally important small creatures. 🐝
📌The Truth About Lawns
When we think of habitat loss, we usually imagine bulldozers and stripped forests. But acres of manicured lawn are just as much a loss of habitat.
According to NASA, lawns cover 40 million acres, or 2%, of land in the US, making them the single largest irrigated crop! Lawns are mowed, fertilized, chemically treated, and watered, taking up a lot of precious time, money, and other resources.
Lawns provide little benefit to wildlife and are often harmful. Grass-only lawns lack healthy floral resources and nesting sites for bees and are often treated with pesticides that harm bees and other invertebrates.
If 10% of lawns in the US were replaced with pollinator-friendly native plants, we would add 4 million acres of pollinator habitat. Think about that number for a minute. 4 million acres.
📌Why Mow Less in Spring
We need to rethink the manicured American lawn! Every small change, from mowing less to transitioning your lawn into a more naturally diverse food source landscape, can make a big difference.
The start of the growing season is a critical time for hungry, newly emerged, native bees. Flowers can be hard to find. By allowing the lawn to grow longer and letting flowers bloom, your lawn can provide nectar and pollen to help your bee neighbors thrive.
Did You Know?
Being low in protein, Dandelions aren’t a good food source for bees.
Mowing less creates habitat and can increase the abundance and diversity of wildlife, including bees and other pollinators.
Mowing every two or three weeks can increase the number of blooms to provide valuable bee food. Several studies show that reduced mowing also helps butterflies and many other beneficial insects. 🦋
And think about how many more hours per month you will have to spend with family and friends. It’s a win-win scenario for everyone! 💚
