Here’s a fun little comparison. I know there are many, many folks out there making graphic tshirts. I also know there’s a plethora of materials at various price points. And the common approach to tshirt sales is to get the cheapest materials that will look good for a minute so the best sales price can be charged.
The brown shirt I purchased from someone about 5-6 yrs ago, well before I started making my own. Actually this is what prompted me to start doing my own when it arrived looking poorly made. It’s probably been worn maybe a dozen times in all those years and I always wash inside out in cold and dry on low inside out.
The grey shirt is 4yrs old and worn a couple times a month. Same washing protocol…
This is an excellent example of poor materials, poor making process and how pricing can vary.
I always assume anything I buy or make should last. I still have frequently worn clothing from my teenage years .. and for those not in the know, I just turned 50. I don’t keep a lot of clothes so everything I own is well worn. And many times looks not much different from new. I apply the same expectation to what I make. I know it’s going to be put through its paces and stressed by wear & washing. So I feel confident charging a reasonable price that covers quality materials and a more careful process.
All this to say while it’s ok to be cost conscious, but don’t forget to factor in the wear you may/may not get out of a piece for the price!
