At Frost Family Farm, we are working in the garlic field today!

It is important to have a watchful eye around this time to catch scapes growing early in the season.

For those that don't know what scapes are, check out our blog:
https://frostfamilyfarm.com/garlic-scapes-what-are-they/

Scapes take vital nutrients from the garlic bulb to grow seeds. So if you want big, healthy garlic bulbs, make sure to cut your scapes.

But don't throw them away; save them to add to your favorite dishes!

Here at Frost Family Farm, we are showcasing our garlic plants from early April. As you can see, the soil is dark and rich with life, and worms were wiggling around while we were tending to the plants.

We provide our garlic plants with a fresh, heaping dose of compost in early spring to give them an extra boost to grow big and strong!

As you can see in the second photo, we moved the straw away from each individual plant and added compost around them. Each plant receives individual care. It is a tedious, remedial task, but we feel it's necessary so each individual plant thrives to give you big, flavorful garlic come harvest season.

At Frost Family Farm, we take the sanitation of our products seriously.

We use Star San, a popular, food-grade, acid-based no-rinse sanitizer. It is widely used in the food and beverage industry to eliminate bacteria.

Frost Family Farm uses this for our product containers, molds, and jars (including the lids, etc.).

Then, we let them air dry. Any water left on the containers could not only dilute our products but also make it easy for moisture to build up and mold to form.

So, the drying process is just as important as the sanitation process. 🧼

At Frost Family Farm, we can't wait for our trees to start growing delicious fruit!

There's something special about this time of year. When the trees come back to life and every branch is covered in blooms.

These flowers are more than just pretty; they're the promise of the fruit to come. A quiet reminder that growth takes time, patience, and a little bit of sunshine 🌸🌿.

Our little helper at Frost Family Farm did NOT want to get out of bed for another long day of work at the farm! Yet, reluctantly, she finally got out of her cozy, warm bed to help with encouragement to continue the diligent work needed on the farm.

A dog is certainly a man's best friend. She follows us whenever we go on the farm and oversees our work to ensure we are doing a good job. Nothing like accountability on all fronts! πŸ˜… πŸΎπŸ•

At Frost Family Farm, spring finally reared its head with these beautiful daffodils we planted two years ago at our gate. We plan on planting more bulbs of different varieites in the fall!

Fun fact about daffodils and other bulb flowers: Bulbs flowers come back with everything they need to grow and that is why they are able to bloom so quickly in the spring after being in the cold ground all winter. They also reproduce, so you should expect more to grow year after year! 🌼.

At Frost Family Farm, we love to see nature interacting with and benefiting from the crops we grow here at the farm.

Although praying mantises do not have a long lifespan, we are hoping, come spring, there will be hundreds spread all around the farm for many years to come. We don't believe in spraying our crops; this way, it doesn't disturb the natural balance of nature.

Here at Frost Family Farm, we wanted to show you a quick video of the steps we used to plant our garlic cloves for next year's harvest (2026).

We started by breaking down the large bulbs into individual cloves. Then, we sifted through, only using the largest cloves.

Then we soaked the cloves in fish fertilizer water for up to 12 hours the day before planting. This ensures the cloves get a good head start with some much-needed nutrients!

Next, we planted them in the ground, leaving approximately 6" spacing for optimal growing conditions.

Then we put worm castings around the cloves (you can use compost as well) prior to covering them up with soil, and then finally added straw to protect it during the winter cold!

Here at Frost Family Farm chestnut season is one of our favorite times of year. These nuts were harvested from our mature chestnut trees. A great reminder of what patience and care can produce.

We’re excited to begin offering chestnut saplings soon, so others can experience the same joy of growing their own harvest 🌰! πŸ‚πŸ
