Fire season has begun. The Bain Fire is burning 3 miles south of our apiary. It is now 60% contained and not expanding north.

All the beekeeping accounts are posting about the queen bee today because she is the genetic mother of her colony. Yet, once she lays an egg, she’s done. She doesn’t feed, clean or care for her young—that’s the job of the nurse bees! Only nurse bees can produce royal jelly, a special food provided to very young larvae akin to the milk mammals provide their offspring. Nurse bees use their bodies to warm the brood nest. Nurse bees clean and feed and tend to the brood in the hive. In short, the nurse bees are the unsung mothers of the hive. 🐝 So happy Mother’s Day to all the different types of moms out there, whether you have the title or not! 💛
