I thought I would share an update with our cover crop grazing. We had nice fluffy snow that is now melting and turning to ice. The cows are nearing the end of their grazing. We really like to see the manure distribution on the fields! Because of the snow that was available, they actually chose to lick snow rather than get water from a flowing creek nearby. After we turned them out into the cover crop, we expected to see tracks and trails going to water. It was at least 4 or 5 days that they hadn’t been to water so we called them to it thinking they would be very thirsty. They weren’t even interested because they had been eating snow. We definitely noticed how this has also helped with manure distribution. Instead of eating and then going for water, they stay on the fields and the manure doesn’t build up near the water source.

After we set up bales for bale grazing we had Will take a few pictures with his drone. We have an insulated tank that stays frost free with ground heat. We open drinking holes. Wes built portable windbreak that we move several times throughout the winter to keep cows closer to the bales they are eating and to help distribute manure load. We set up enough fence for about 3 weeks at a time with moves every 2 days using geared reels and poly wire. Doing that much ahead allows us to choose days that are nicer weather for fence setup.

The cover crop regrowth is still nice and green underneath the snow. This was a good opportunity for the calves and young cows to learn how to graze through snow.
