It’s a wrap! The 2026 season is behind us. A big thanks to the crew that helped roll up the miles of sap lines in the woods. We sure do miss Dad (Dave Huxtable), no one loved this time of year and sugaring more than him. His last maple season with us was 2017. We were going through his diary from the mid-60’s in which he wrote on April 9, “Sap ran in the morning. We gathered till 11pm and boiled till midnight. Art, Ed, Jerry and Bill were there.” That was after a full day of chores on the farm!

Wrapping up one of our best maple seasons ever with over 400 gallons of syrup made. We began February 28 and our last boil of 2026 was today! Buckets have been pulled, evaporator cleaned, the wood shed is empty—now it’s on to the woods to clean lines and roll them up.

Tasting this year’s crop of maple syrup was popular with visitors to our sugarhouse this weekend. Of the 3 grades—golden, amber, and dark—the dark syrup with a robust maple flavor was the most popular, but the voting was close! Come taste it and decide for yourself. Our second open house is next Sunday, March 29, 10am-4pm. We look forward to seeing you!

We shut the sugarhouse down around midnight after a record-setting day with more than 4,000 gallons of sap collected before things froze up. The sap was literally gushing into the tanks yesterday. Temperatures in the 60’s Monday and rain versus the teens today, snow and a howling wind. Good time to catch up and continue stocking the shelves with jugs of oh so sweet maple syrup!

We fired up the evaporator for the first boil of the 2026 maple season tonight—the last day of February! Nice to have friends drop in and visit. Temperatures in the 40s a good part of the day. We gathered around 600 gallons of sap. Looking back in our sugar house journal, the first boil of 2025 was Feb. 25. Sugaring, such a sweet season!

We are nearly ready to tap and wow is the snow deep in the woods, talk about cross training! We so appreciate the extra helping hands stretching laterals and putting on new spiles. The forecast shows moderating temperatures ahead and we will be ready for whenever Mother Nature allows maple season to break loose!

The start of the 2026 maple season can’t be far off and we are getting ready! Pat and Mitch have been wading through the snow putting up lateral lines, checking the main lines, and putting new spiles on the drop lines…all in preparation for tapping the trees. Lots of work still ahead, but oh so worth it!
