Most of my hives made it alive out of this long winter in Ohio. Some are just so huge that I have to split them and turn them into two or even three colonies.
Worker bees are foraging for pollen and nectar. Foraging pollen is a sign of the existence of larvae (baby bees).
Looking forward for a great spring and summer ahead.

The warmer weather last week allowed me to check on my honeybee colonies.
I check on their food store. Do they have enough food to last them until the end of the winter?
This is a task that can be easily done during the spring, summer and early fall. You simply open the hive and go through its frames. Honey and nectar are easily identified.
In the winter, this task is a little more difficult. I can’t do a full inspection because that will break the cluster and can kill the bees.
In the summer and early fall months, the bees fill the top frames with honey and push the colony to the bottom box. Then they feed on the honey over the late fall to early spring months consuming about 1mm per day.
My inspection consists of opening the cover to see if the colony has reached the top of the box. If they did, that means that they are running out of food.

I am happy to report that all my colonies are alive and have plenty of food as of Christmas.

Did you know that a drone (male honey bee) does not contribute much to the honey bee colony as far as housekeeping, nursing, or foraging? They also do not have a stinger to defend the colony or themselves. Their ultimate goal is to mate with a virgin queen. Unfortunately for them, only a few will mate with a queen and when they do, they pay the ultimate price. They die immediately after mating with the queen.

Starting in late September/early October, the worker bees will start to drag the drones outside the colony and in some cases, they will dismember their wings or kill them. See, it is all about efficiency for the hive. Drones, if kept alive, will lounge around and simply consume a lot of honey during the cold months. The worker bees won't have that. If you were to peek into a colony now in NE Ohio, there will be a queen, thousands of workers, and no drones.

Efficiency:
The worker honey bees are all about efficiency. When a forager comes home after a long trip of collecting nectar, they are greeted at the entrance of the hive by other workers. The nectar is then regurgitated by the forager into the mouth of the greeting bee who transfers the nectar to its final cell for storage. This way the forager can return quickly to the fields and collect more nectar.

The Drone

Did you know that the male honey bee is called a drone?

Drones are minorities in the hive. In a healthy colony, there are over 50,000 worker bees (females) to about 200-300 drones.

The workers decide how many drones to produce and communicate with the queen where to lay drone eggs by making larger cells. The queen will measure the cell before laying an egg. If large, she will lay an egg without fertilizing it. Yes, the queen determines which egg gets fertilized and which egg does not.
An unfertilized egg will become a drone with half the chromosomes.

The drone does not have a stinger and does not contribute much to help the workers. They eat the food and travel from one colony to another feeding in between their flights to the Drone Congregation Area (DCA).

Drones congregate in the sky in a close-by DCA and wait for a virgin queen to arrive. Upon mating, the drone will die and fall from the sky.

A drone has a grandfather but does not have a father.
