People oriented Gypsy horses, and their taller relatives the Drum horse are such beautiful animals! One could believe they were mythical creatures!
The love of Equine activities/driving/riding/training in ALL disciplines and activities. I currently have 2 registered Gypsy fillies and one registered Drum filly. The plan is to develop and explore their individual abilities, and breed from them to develop a superior next generation! Lofty goals, but paramount along the way is to enjoy myself, the animals, and almost more importantly allow the a
nimals to enjoy their lives also while challenging them to reach their potentials! The coffee pot is always on and the door is always open for horse chatter!!!!!

Ok...new Rommy video...
I CANNOT believe how fast foals grow ...π³
Its like having a human baby only on accelerator steroids .....π
He changes day to day...is SO inquisitive....he's what some would call 'mouthy' but i call it innate curiosityπ - after all, he has NO HANDS - how the heck is he supposed to explore his world...!!??.ππ
I didn't get the beginning of the episode, but when i held the hat up for about a half a sec, he wanted to jump back (as it was nothing he recognized as familiar) - but his curious nature got the best of him. He had to come right up/smalling, tasting...lol..So on the head it went! Mama was eating / looked over/did a double take and came to investigate/deemed it inconsequential and promptly went back to her lunch....π€£
He wants to explore everything - and i want him to too. He's learning quite well the difference between exploring with his lips vs teeth..lol...(thanks to a well timed smack or two to the mouth when teeth were used...lolππ)
I watch him thinking about it when hes checking out my bare arms....i use the phrase 'NO toofers' as a warning to help him remember....he has picked this up quickly....
I want him to learn a plethora of tricks - including picking odd things up - it is SO easy to teach things like that when they ARE so inquisitive....
Anyway - more fun in the
'Adventures w Rommy' department...
ππππ...

Did some, er, skid steer 'desensitization' with Rommy today......
ππ€£ππ€£
Also some of his antics...
Pretty mild morning for him..hes usually 4-5 laps around the outside of the round pen by now..π€¦ββοΈπ€¦ββοΈ
Must be the humidity slowed him down today...π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ

OMFG...
THIS IS HYSTERICALβ£β£β£
Im still laughing...wiping tears...lolol

06/15/2021
We got back from Champlain and i was AMAZED to see how 'Rommy' had changed....π₯°π₯°π³π³ππ
We were gone 5+ days but it might as well have been a month...
He had great care while we were gone (thanks to Stephanie Woodcock Archambo)
I had just done a very rough clip job the day we left cause i was so worried about him overheating while we were gone, so forgive the rough clip (was my issue - rushing - not his - he stood like a champ!!)
And he needs another bath...ππ
But I've decided on a name
"Meme's Rom Baro of MCF"
I was told when i solicited names from the UK /Save Appleby Fair page that 'rom baro' meant tribal leader....i had some others picked out too, but 'Rommy' fit him well..
Besides - he ALREADY thinks he's the boss of us all...π€π€π³π³
Hes spirited/ headstrong - just like his dam was when she was young ....and i couldnt be happier with him....he has long pasterns and ATTITUDE and starting to get shaggy legs at 5 weeks old last Monday ...
We will be working out who is REALLY at the top of the pecking order as time goes on....ππ€£ππ€£
He can think he is for a bit....i think we are entering his mouthy stage, as i saw him literary chewing on his mothers side as we led out this morning.....gave a pretty sharp swat with the rope - that caught him off guard for sure....the expression was priceless ππππ
Mama is not near as protective of him now - so he is 'allowed' to visit Kelpie and Copper...altho he seems to gave an affinity for Copper ....
He was standing behind her, nipping her back legs and she just turned her head like "What ARE you doing back there!!??π€" she finally picked up a leg and waved it at him and he went running off to mama squealing with joy...
OMG...i think its the equine equivalent of the human terrible 2's ....π³π³π₯΄π₯΄
It is just too funny to watch his little personality develop. I used to think Meme was a little hard on him (pinning her ears at some things he did) but im pretty sure SHE knew what was coming...i never EVER see him chewing on HER legs...π€£ππ€£π
He does try to chew on her side/neck but thats only when im leading him on the leadline WITH her... seems to have started this new phase while we were gone...i think its his frustration with being on the leadline instead of getting to run, which i still allow sometimes....
Forgive my amazement and ramblings...i am really enjoying this special baby ...he truly is a Meme Mini-Me....

Another 'day-in-the-life'
ππππ
The 'Boy' (no name decided yet BUT hubby insists on calling him "Dip" - short for Dip$hitπ...)
Got his first article of apparel worn today - his halter!
Took it in stride...i think mama was more concerned with whatvwas attached to her boy than he was....
He is a typical Gypsy tho - tries to SHOVE his way through everything......π€£ππ€£π
As witnessed in the video- tryi g to push his way through the gate/pailπ€π
Then we had a little butt-rope walking session outside on the way to the pasture....He is getting WILD on the way! He runs SO fast! Goes SO far so quickly.....π
Will not be long till he reaches the road....π€¦ββοΈπ€¦ββοΈ

Im over the moon with how well Meme did with her 1st born..
And "HE" is so friendly, getting charge of those long legs...ππ

OK....EXCITEMENT AT MCF THIS MORNING...β£β£
Been getting up nights to check on Meme with her foaling date approaching...
Checked her last night about 2:30...
No teat drips/tailhead not loose/not any more bagged up...
Well, i fed hay/cleaned stalls....git up about 7:30, figured there was no big rush to go out...had some phone calks to make/ bank/other arrangements...
Had a cuppa ambition...sauntered out to the barn about 9 am..
Firat thing i saw was her back end w placenta hanging out, next thing I saw was a foal staggering around!
ITS A COLT β£β£ Healthy/up/nursing/walking around/passing his meconium all by himself π₯°π₯°β£β£
A few pics, then we'll wait till he straightens out some so we can see his promise!

My concersation with the vets first thing this morning....
As im trying to narrow down what time they will arrive..
Notice I said "narrow down" - NOT pin down....
Morning or afternoon would have been nice....
So - i turned them out...π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ
Just called the vets..
To make sure they were coming today/what time..
So...this is what i got for reply :
Them:"Yes - you are on the schedule ....
Me: any idea what time/or even narrow it down to morning or afternoon?"
Them: no..they usually call about 45 min before they head your way."
Me: Well, i can assume they are coming SOME time today then?"
Them: "yup...as i said, they will call about 45 min before they get there"
Me: "Ok - thanks"
Not too helpful...βΉ

My VERY pregnant, bagging mare Meme..π₯°π₯°β£β£
She is not due till mid May - she is bagging up what i consider quickly...
But i have limited experience with equines...it is probably somewhat similar to what first calf heifers go thruπ€·ββοΈ
When i saw her this morning (this photo was taken yesterday afternoon) i took a look at her and thought "Wow! Your belly didnt look like that yesterday!"π³π³
Im thinking she will foal earlier than later...
Shes so funny!ππ i have akways toyched her udder/cleaned her cleft between the 2 halves ..when i touch her udder NOW, she puts her head/nose WAY up in the air, holding it there while i stroke the sides of her bag....lololol. I think my cool hands must feel good to her...lololol
I can almost hear her thinking "Can you PLEASE get rid of that damn lump between my legs!!!!"
I feel a cross between excited and worried. π€¦ββοΈπ€¦ββοΈ....Up until now, she has done everything i have asked of her - never an issue....im hoping and praying this will be no different for her - but i know how wrong things can go in a heart beat....πππππ

Today - was supposed to rain - but so far, no luck...
It is VERY dry!
We need some rain for the pastures to start growing...the poor ponies are still in their winter yard....they WANT GREEN GRASS... LOLOLOL
Meme got her spring bath/clip/ tail redone yesterday...need to tackle mane another day....ππ

Had some WONDERFUL visitors todayβ£β£
Kevin Seymour, his wife Denise and their amazingly curious son Devin !!!!!! They all came out to enjoy some nicer weather, feed the chickens, and go for the 2021 inaugural buggy ride!
It went well...we prob didnt do more than a mile and a half, maybe 2 at the most - mostly walking, a little trot ( HER idea - she wanted to GIT down the road!!!! Bless her heart).
We went out back and must have seen 20 +/- deer in our hayfield nibbling the new green shoots.....the sun was ALMOST out (so it wasnt hot) - much better for an out of shape pregnant horse ππππππ

My equine community/online friend Noel Roor (owner of Blackfire Gypsys and Friesians) wrote this about riding and what she thinks about whenever someone asks her how old shes gonna becwhen she stops riding....
This is her response.....
(Kudos for a beautiful essay on what makes this so important Noel....i love youπ₯°π₯°π₯°π₯°)
FROM Noel Roor:
When your spouse or a parent asks you "When will you stop riding"?
I walk away, and don't say anything because of this...
THE DREAM THAT MANY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND:
My horse is my personal dream.
One day when I am very old and when I can not walk anymore, it will be in my heart as a trophy of my memories.
I met people who taught me something and have the same spirit and I met others that I'm glad I forgot.
I got wet,
I felt cold,
And I felt warm,
I was afraid,
I fell,
And I stood up,
I even hurt myself, I have been broken,
But also, I laughed out loud inside .
I spoke a thousand times with myself.
I sang and shouted with joy like a madman,
And yes ... sometimes I cried.
I have seen wonderful places and lived unforgettable experiences.
I often made unplanned jumps that even Beezie Madden, would be proud of; other times I made jumps full of terror.
I stopped a thousand times to see a landscape.
I spoke with perfect strangers, and I forgot people I see every day.
I went out with my demons inside and returned home with a feeling of absolute peace in my heart.
I always thought of how dangerous it is, knowing that the meaning of courage is to advance through my fears.
Every time I go up to my horse, my heart smiles, I think about how special he is.
I hope on his back, and I am home. His feet feel like my own.
I stopped talking about it to those who do not understand, and I learned to communicate with other riders.
I have met some amazing people I now call friends because of my horses.
I spent money that I did not have, giving up many things, but all these things are not worth even one special moment with my horse.
He is not a means of transport or a piece of iron with wheels, it is the lost part of my soul and my free spirit never to be tamed.
When someone says to me: "You have to sell the horse and you have to be more sensible"!
I did that once when I was going to college. Now I am old enough to know there is no sense in this statement.
I just swing my head and smile, keeping my
horses ! Riding with a content smile.
Only the person who loves them understands it.
May God bless my friends and all their horses...
So the adventure continues as I know yours will too.
With bolts and plates from injuries, and a f'ing Aarp card in my pocket.
May we all never forget, to enjoy every ride .

Pretty much SPOT on....
How a horsewoman knows she is rich:
I am rich. I have $15 in my checking account and two geldings in the barn.
I am rich. I have a car that mostly works and enough gas to get to the barn every day this week.
I am rich. I have boxes of pasta and generic sauce in my pantry and enough hay to feed my horse through the winter.
I am rich. I have enough old coats and sweaters to layer up and stay warm while I do barn chores.
I am rich. I vacation by camping with my horses and going to cheer on my horse riding friends at horse shows. Sometimes I even play too, and spend $1000 to bring home a fifty cent ribbon that I will treasure more than a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower.
I am rich. I have tools: duct tape and baling twine and the know how to fix just about anything with these tools.
I am rich. I find joy in making my own things, making do, and making right. I have a 30 year old saddle, a 50 year old body, and the wonder and joy of a 6 year old child learning that a horse can give her wings.
I am rich.
My wealth is not measured in dollar signs but in horsey snorts and nickers. My riches aren't spent on electronics and fancy clothes but are shared with my human and four footed friends.
Next time someone finds out that I have a horse and says, " You must be rich to afford that" I will smile, and agree.

Well.....it never rains but it pours...π
Copper's mysterious nasal infection is no longer a mystery....
My poor Kelpie broke open a disgusting abcess on her neck sonetime during the overnight. I have never seen strangles in over 40 years of owning horses, but i cant say that any more now...π. The vet took cultures from Kelpies abcess and nasal cavities, but shes almost 100% positive it will come back strangles ....Some horses just get mild cases of it (Coppers 'sinus' infection')...π€¦ββοΈπ€¦ββοΈ
I had noticed Kelpie going to the back of her stall when i yelled at the horse next to her when he was being an idiot/tearing his stall apart...i told Richard yesterday i had to STOP doing that and just turn him out first because it was making Kelpie nervous so she wouldn't come to me at the gate any more... i thought the change in her behavior was due to that...but it wasnt...πͺ
i never clip her head, so she had foot long chin/cheek whiskers...so much hair i never noticed any swelling when it was minimal..she had not a whisker of nasal discharge because i have been watching tbeir noses like a hawk - since Coppers outbreak... ..has not been off feed at all.....they have all had a little extra hay left in the mornings but i have been feeding more at night cause i did not want them running out of hay on the overnights.....
So far - the Queen(Meme) and Eric are asymptomatic...fingers crossed ....
But the slightest deviation from normal and they will be on Antibiotics too...

Three clean girlsβ£β£β£β£β£ππ Worth the effort.....and the cardioπ€£π Have to braid up tails tonight when i bring them in (except Kelpie's)...Copper's is so long she pees in it...i got that stained part almost grown out! Meme has a black tail/wouldn't be too worried about her tail BUT the wet tail stains her white rear feathers π€¬π€¬ /its SO thick and heavyπ³π³. Last year i took the clippers down the underside of her dock to give her some weight relief... I think i need to do it again . Plus its dragging on the ground...i cut 2 feet off it a year ago/ i think about 10" has grown back......... It was a BEAUTIFUL October dayβ£β£ needed to get it done / weather's gonna get colder from here on out. November on out isnt generally too good for bathing.....ππ€£π

A little jog down the road...., getting ready for young 'visitors .....always lack a little of the "foreward" headed away from home....she's too funny....everytime i started to say something for the video - she 'anticipated' i was going to say whoa... Lololol And she'd stop..........π€£π Im thinking SHE'S thinking 'this is too much like work' Lolololol

I was clipping Meme, (aka the #HAIRBAG, lol) right outside Coppers stall. Copper would have none if it - SHE wanted the clippers on HER! NO doubt...! I remembered back to the very first time i clipped her. She stood stock still for the hour and a half it took me to do her ! Never even tied her to anything - she loved it...lol...she loves the heat and vibration Every time i tried to clip a path down Meme's back, Copper would stop the clippers with her nose - it was really pretty cute....i tried to catch it on video - but it was hard to clip/filmat same time #shortarmcurse #notgoodselfietaker

Well...
BATH yesterday in 28Β° weather (at least she had heated water! -i didn't...

Poor Kelpie has had a rough year...I know I'll never have another Amish horse in my barn once these leave......never vaccinate for anything... except they DO vaccinate for EEE now - they were losing horses all over from that......I guess the Elders finally 'allowed' vaccinating for that.
Oh yeah - but not the kids - for anything.....

Meme got some work today too! Itcwas just a perfect day. After a couple times around the warm up trail (around my 5 acres of pasture), we worked on bending around cones/flexing at the poll - great progress. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly she learns.....

I cant get it out of sideways mode... π€¬ But anyways - we had a good pull around the pasture TWICE!

Lengthened my stirrups...i am just so short and round....put a lollipop pad under the saddle seat....i couldn't figure out why my legs feet seemed so far out in front of me in past videos .....its better, but im still off....(be kind - dont state the obvious..lol.....i need to minimize MY girth).. I need to take some professional lessons over the winter......train both me AND my horse! My knowledge is fine for backyard horse riding - got great foundations on my ponies... Now - for some detail work!

Well...its been a long 3 years...waiting for maturity.
Had first ride on Copper today!!!!!!
Just a very short outing/had the extra security if my loyal best friend Richard Mattison at the end of the lunge line for some "insurance". I have been ground driving her for 2 years - altho i didnt work her at all most of the summer - it was so horrible here i barely did anything but care for them all summer...ππ
All went well....she knew to follow the person on the lead line, altho i told him to exert no pressure - unless she got stupid...lololol...its a long way down to the ground, and youth is a long way from me! I dont bounce like i used to!
But i had crawked on her back in the stall many times with treats just to aee what she would do. She is a treat w***e... lololol ....lucky for me!
Had to have Richard go into the house and retrieve the phone to get a short video just for posterity ....

Richard's video as we got back.... She saw the "Apple-Man" in that skid steer - she knew where SHE wanted to be...lol....bad Meme.....lol

WELL, after what seems an eternity, we got a ride in today.. Sadly, the snomobile trail was a no-go...no way packed enough.....and GETTING to the trail by the shortest path possible we were in belly deep snow that has packed down just enough to make walking thru it VERY hard...I give Meems a LOT of credit for carrying me about 75 yards thru very difficult going in that belly deep snow.... With it getting no better on the trail, we were forced to backtrack....I know you see horses going thru belly deep snow in the movies, but unless it us JUST right - it is a real pain in the arse when it's that deep...very hard on a jorse for sure! So - down the road to visit my neighbor we went.... Richard had been hauling wood from the barn to the house, and nicely waited for me to get close enough to get a video for me... Thanks for that sweetie.....I like to "see" what she looks like /is doing when I'm up on her back, especially since we are just getting started!

Well.....
The cart is put away for the winter and it is time to concentrate on saddle work...way past time I can have a horse I can just throw a saddle on and ride - just like most people do!...
It's been 2 years since I started my "collection" of ponies... lol...time to "git after it"... lol..
I made my self a little promise yesterday - to attempt to work her under saddle every day - even if it is nasty and we have just a short ride...she still hasn't made the mental "transition" to having me on her back....first thing she does when I get up there is,to turn around and chew on my booted toes a little....first one side - then the other....too funny....but she never will make the transition unless I keep after it....
We went out yesterday - and she was pretty "hinky"...lots of back rounding/stiffening up/gathering herself like she was waiting to explode....lololol....
Took a lot if verbal encouragement /took a LOT for ME not to get all stiff + nervous - a little worried about falling off...rode without stirrups a good bit of the ride to be able to "eject" and slide off quickly and safely....

We made it through the show the whole weekend!
I can tell you one thing - having a bum leg allowed me to visit a little more/make some new friends/get to know old friends even better...
A definite WIN/WIN situation - even as hard as it was for me to get around....exhausting as it was ππ.
A pleasant, big surprise was the judges reaction to Rommyβ£β£
He took Reserve Grand Ch stallion under one and Grand Ch Stallion under the other ...but im embarrassed to say i do not know which judge placed what placing...
(Omg...the entire weekendwas such a struggle..π₯΄)
BUT Duane Stutzman and Elaine Page definately liked him...
I so appreciate the time Duane Stutzman took to come over and give me pointers on a new harness we had just fitted to Meme...i had ordered it months before, and it dId not arrive until just prior to the show. Thanks COVIDπ€¦ββοΈπ€¦ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ
Meme was in heat/besides herself with weaning starting/she was plain PISSED...LOLOLOL
She had such an ordeal earlier in the summer - was left at the vets to get bred SIX days (yes, just 6 days) and lost over 200 # while she was there.....she was a shadow of herself when i got her back...she has been working hard to just get back to her normal self - she was definately at a disadvantage. But - she did well in the obstacle class and ribboned there...So - not a total wash out...πππ
The greatest time was connecting with a longtime fb/online friend Kat Wiegand and her husband Bill...and her SPECTACULAR "TINY".... Kat is a force of nature
She is one of THE most accomplished, experienced horsewomen i have ever met...
Whereas this whole showing thing Is pretty much a sea of mystery/confusion to me, she knows EVERYTHING and was patient with my idiotic questions...
Thanks to her wonderful Bill in helping me get the harness fitted to Meme last minute....we fud the very best we could, and Judge Stutzman indicated where we needed a few adjustments ... thats kindness right there...
I was very lucky to have the support of kind friends that i did - from my daughter Hallie Ell being my legs for me (official GO'FER)
to the wonderful, thoughtful Tasha Landman running to get my once again forgotten back number...to my better half Richard Mattison, helping me get ready to go/holding down the fort at home so i could even get here , and to Stephanie Woodcock-Archambo for an extra truck and trailer (so i only had to make THREE trips to get everything there....
THANK YOU ALL for your time and consideration.....it made my weekend so much more bearableπ₯°π₯°
(I needed to duplicate Kat's wonderful little mechanical pony
π€£ππ€£π....i had definate 'golfcart envy'....β£)
Next year/new knee/new show venue/another shot all way aroundππ
to be able to do what i do...
BUSY times at MCF!
But a GOOD busy..ππ₯°
Finally got my hands on a wonderful de-struction/construction crew - Bill William Brosnan and Tammy Brosnan Bartlett ...
Whereas i cant nail 4 boards together and have them come out square, these two CAN! THANK goodness...
I am finally going to have an office/feed room/tack room - BE STILL MY HEARTπ₯°
NO more dusty/dirty/bird poopy tack...πππππ
Cant wait to see the finished product...ππ
Thank you so very much Bill and Tamπ₯°π₯°π₯°π₯°π₯°
Got some discouraging news yesterday....
Meme did not settle to her second breeding...but - she needs the rest now. She had kept her weight BEAUTIFULLY - so i made the decision to try to rebreed her. Initually, i tried w the local vets/wasted a mo th ifctryung to get them to come out in the mirni g so id have time to contact stallion owners all over the country. But no success there, so i looked fir another place- it was getting late in the season - end of July...
SO - no foal for her next year...After her 6 days during her 1st experience at the breeders, she lost over 200 pounds....
I do think that had some bearing on why she didnt settle the first time - but the place i brought her seemed to think i was exaggerating. I was not...
The vets there are just super....im not surebwhat they did to my horse while she was there.....
BUT - i know what they DIDNT do - they didnt feed and water my nursing mare adequately...
Copper also lost weight - she needed to - but from working - not insufficient water/feed intake...
Meme still looks poor...i have tried to ask them what happened, written 2 letters, and no response..
Had i not seen it myself, i would not have believed a horse could look so bad in 6 days...π³βΉβΉπππ...
I brought her beet pulp/soy down with her and told them i soaked it/told them she was feed 3X a day AND had the conversation that they were A DRAFT breed/ate a lot more more forage than light horses...
They assured me they had had drafts before and knew all about it...
I tried to pick them up after breeding, but i was working 12hr days at the hospital/ and was not allowed to pick them up off hours...
I should have offered them extra money/but i had NO idea they were not caring for her...πͺπͺπͺ
At the 2nd rebreeding, we made the 2 hr trip (4 hrs total) FIVE times....20 hours on the road that week - jut to get her down there..
Because i could NOT bring myself to leave her there and drive away..
Im so disgusted .....
The vets were fantastic - they kniw their stuff/the barn care sucked....
I dont know what to do...
I requested them to weigh her when i brought them down - i was excited to see what they actually weighed...
But I guess they did not do that - or they would understand much better
what had gone wrong..
After being home for 2 weeks and going back, she only weighed 1200 on the nose... and she barely had her gut back/still can see her trailhead... which to me, means she was BELOW 1200 pounds when we took her back after the initial 6 days - which in itself was unbelievable ...
Im really hoping she gets in shape for the show....im not sure she will
Unbelievable......one tries to prevent all the foibles one can imagine...
My horse looked like she came from an abuse situation...
Omfg.....ill never get over this...

Picture if my beautiful mare BEFORE she went down there....
Services were performed at a breeding facility /Meme was in the chute getting her ultrasound, and Rommy was his usual self - attempting to get into EVERYthing!!!
He walked up to the breeding dummy, and, like he knew EXACTLY what he was doing, he proceeded to nibble and mount the breeding rack π³π³
Sadly, i had left my phone in the truck, but it was pretty funny...

We had a chance to weigh him too. I wormed him last week (estimated his weight then as 350)
BUT - TODAY ON THE SCALE HE WAS 455 #....
Im happy how hes growing...ππ
