Cool spring mornings with the warm sun glistening off the dew on the grass, new calves being born, and it being so quiet that all you hear are the birds in the trees along with the munching sounds of cattle on a new section of grass. It just feels like a good day. 😊

The time of year we look forward to all winter, putting the cattle out in fresh grass. That was Friday. Today Maggie was helping put out temporary fence lines so I can move them to a fresh paddock tomorrow morning.

There is nothing better on a raw day than a nice hot bowl of beef stew. We can help you out with that. We have beef going to butcher in early March if you would like to purchase some. We have two halves available. You think that may be more beef than you want to purchase at one time? Not a problem, we also sell it by a mixed fifty pound box or by the cut. Let us know and we can help take care of that beef craving you have now. Locally raised Artesian Springs Farm beef, USDA inspected.

The temperature had risen to 40 as I was walking out the door this morning to take care of livestock. A brisk morning is a sure sign that Autumn has arrived in case you were doubting it. In case you are trying to hold on to the the last of summer.

While I like all the seasons, well except maybe when summer is to hot, Autumn is my favorite. It’s a season of reward as the waning days of sunlight bring us to harvest time. Farmers are harvesting crops to store up. We are seeing pumpkins, squash and those end of the season tomatoes and other more summer crops. Apples and grapes are out in abundance. We see the results of work done over the months. It’s a busy time of year.

Yet here I sit watching and listening to cows graze for awhile. More work is calling but I’m going to take a few moments to enjoy the season. To watch the cows and listen to their contented grazing. To see the heavy dew glisten in the sun and to enjoy the warmth of the sun on my back. To just sit and harvest some joy. Joy that the Lord blesses us with if we can stop for a moment and see it.

How do you celebrate Labor Day on the farm? Why you do labor of course. Livestock still needs to be taken care of. They aren’t very good at celebrating holidays. That said, you don’t farm unless you enjoy working. So today I took care of cattle, enjoyed watching a dozen turkeys moving around some pastures and finally winding the day down with some ASF grass fed beef NY Strip steaks on the grill.

Lot 1 Oliver 2019

Very excited and thankful to acquire this excellent bull from the Oliver Angus program to be our next herd sire. A Banjo of Wye son with lots of good Oliver cows and Alap behind him should work just right on our Barrage heifers and pretty much the whole herd. Thank you to Oliver Angus and Ken Brubaker for making him available.

Cattle grazing happily on some fresh pasture, a cool late summer - early fall breeze at your back on a sunny morning, trees just starting to show their autumn colors and the sounds of geese gathering on the large pond in the distance behind me. Just a few things that are making this day start out nicely and make me thankful to be living a rural life.

Labor Day is a day to take a break from some of the work and enjoy family and friends. We did some of that but there is still work on the farm to do. I had to set up some paddocks for cattle moves in the morning. Even with that work it’s a blessing to be out and enjoy the farm. Maggie and I were watching some of the cattle and watching the sunset after the paddocks were set up. Then after checking the small group out back we watched some turkeys in a pasture. Work like this doesn’t feel like work.

What’s for dinner? Why our own grass fed and finished T-bone steaks. It’s nice to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Well it’s the weekend and you know what that means to farmers? Not a whole lot. There are still animals to be cared for and projects to work on but we do try and kickback when we can. Sipping some coffee, enjoying a little sunshine, and enjoying the sights before heading to the next task.
