LOVE thisโฃ๏ธ
Just as every individual with ANY disability is unique, the way they and their families choose to approach it is equally unique.
Weโ€™re all on the same team and all have so much to learn from each other! ๐Ÿซฑ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿซฒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿค

Infinity symbols or puzzle pieces
Light it up gold or blue
It doesnโ€™t matter to us
Itโ€™s up to you

Rainbows and sunflowers
We donโ€™t mind the ways you show
Just spread awareness
Everywhere you go

Go red instead
Any color that you choose
We wonโ€™t lose focus here
We have too much to lose

Call it โ€œhas autismโ€ or โ€œautisticโ€
Tell us youโ€™re neurodiverse
We donโ€™t care about which label you use
We are all living in the same universe

Neurotypical and plain ordinary
Autism mom, grandma or dad
We donโ€™t exclude here
We think you are all pretty rad

Low functioning, profound and severe
High functioning and socially unique
We know autism is a spectrum
No easy way to describe it, no perfect technique

Autism is full of breathtaking beautifuls
Autism is full of heartbreaking hards
You are definitely right about both
We arenโ€™t all dealt the same cards

We will never tell you not to be sad
But we will tell you to find the joy
We will educate you and show you
That autism can be found in a girl or a boy

We will show you the light
How our kids shatter the nevers
To hold on to realistic hope
And how to navigate their future endeavors

We will show you love needs no words
That communication can be shown in different ways
If you just listen with your heart
I think youโ€™ll be amazed

Take a moment to get inside their world
Tell me, what did you see?
Just a different way of learning and thinking?
I personally thinks itโ€™s extraordinary

You canโ€™t fit our kids inside a box
Nor should you ever try to change them
Masking is horrible for their mental health
They are perfect, you donโ€™t need to save them

Itโ€™s cool here if therapy is your jam
Itโ€™s helped your child learn and grow
Or maybe itโ€™s not your cup of tea
We know itโ€™s not everyoneโ€™s way to go

There is no judgement here
We want to continue to learn
We promise to listen and respect
Let you speak when itโ€™s your turn

We ask that you to listen to us parents
We will continue to listen to autistic children and adults
Both perspectives are important
Please leave out the ugly insults

Letโ€™s work as a team
Letโ€™s get rid of the great divide
Letโ€™s advocate and fight
Thereโ€™s no need to pick a side

We know autism can be wonderful
You wonโ€™t get any arguments here

Our goal is inclusion and acceptance
Not just for the month of April

But for each day of the year

Awareness ๐Ÿซฑ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿซฒ๐Ÿฝ Acceptance

Acceptance.

Some call it autism awareness month.

Others call it autism acceptance month.

I believe both are important. You canโ€™t have one without the other.

Iโ€™ve always believed that the two are like cause and effect.

Growing awareness leads to building the bridge to acceptance.

I once heard a quote that had stayed with me..

โ€œAcceptance means to be in the embrace of what is without resistance.โ€

Itโ€™s wonderful when others are aware of autism.

But to accept is another level, and not just for the people outside our special needs community, but for us parents as well.

Even some of us need time to reach acceptance. And thatโ€™s ok. A huge mix of emotions and changes come with special needs parenting.

What does acceptance look like?

Being included as a special needs family and child in the world. Accommodating a childโ€™s/adultโ€™s needs when and if possible.

Being invited. Being seen and loved for who you are. Knowing that everyone has struggles and that they all look different in everyone. Inclusion.

Acceptance to me looks like a hello from a stranger or a kid including my child and saying, โ€œdoes he want to play tooโ€? Or a helping hand at the store when my child is having a hard time.

A hug and โ€œIโ€™m hereโ€ from a friend instead of an โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€. An โ€œI donโ€™t understand but Iโ€™m trying to, teach meโ€, instead of an โ€œat leastโ€.

Acceptance means understanding and helping without judgment.

It means being kind. Always.
