Water is finally starting to recede. One week ago, our entire pasture was covered with water after getting seven inches of rain dumped on us in a short amount of time. With any luck, we might be able to fix the electric fence that's in the middle of the water nu the end of the week. I'm getting tired of chasing cattle in the middle of the night...

On Sunday, in between rain storms, we gave our pullets their first opportunity at some outside time. I fenced in a smaller area for them to run in. The rest of the run is adjacent to our old barn and there are several holes that the birds could climb through or our farm cats could use to get at the birds. While the cats normally don't bother the older birds (they are big enough to defend themselves!), these pullets aren't at the size to do this yet. We are only letting the pullets out on nice days as we are unsure if the will be able to handle the damp weather very well.

The past four weeks have been busy ones for our chickens! In early May, we received 63 broiler chicks and 42 new layer chicks. It wasn't without some mishaps. We wanted to try a new layer breed and ordered five Sapphire Olive Eggers. There was a mistake with the shipment and they were not included with the Amberlinks and Sapphire Gems that we ordered. The hatchery does not send just five birds so we received a credit. I really wanted to get some birds with colored eggs so we decided to go with a local hatchery and ordered ten Easter Eggers (received 11!) for the same price!

We had all the chicks in the brooder coop but the broiler birds kept getting in with the layer chicks to steal their food and cause trouble. This past Sunday, I moved our older layers into the back part of their coop, cleaned out the front, and the new layer chicks are now living in their own home to thrive. While currently crowded, our older birds have a new fenced in area with grass and weeds to rummage through. We will be processing many of these older birds for "soup" and the ones that are still laying will be moved to join our layers we raised last year.

We have been fortunate that the weather has been kind to us. We have been getting timely rains and it has been fairly cool so keeping the birds comfortable in the brooder coop has been easy so far. We are looking at putting up a small hoop barn to house the broilers once they get bigger and it gets warmer to allow for more ventilation and better shading.

When putting in our pullets yesterday, Roger found a clutch of eggs hidden in the grass near one of the fences. We have been getting about 13 eggs a day in the nesting boxes which isn't bad since they have only started laying about a month ago. They had this clutch hidden very well and only happen to find it because one of the eggs had been kicked out of it. I did the float test on all of them and they appear to be good but we will keep them for ourselves just in case because we don't know for sure how long they have been out there.

We are now going to have check around their outdoor space more closely to make sure we didn't miss anymore eggs. We have some tall weeds we are going to have to clip down but there is a lot of tall grass that could easily be made into a nest to lay eggs. What surprised us was these eggs were found in the open. Usually, chickens like to find a hiding place so we were checking under trees and the under the trailer that is in their space. I thought we were going to be done with egg hunting but I guess that isn't going to be the case!

It's been a while since I have posted. July 11th we received 52 meat chicks. We did lose two within the first week but we now have 50 mini birds that are thriving! They survived last week's heat with plenty of water and a fan blowing on them. I can't believe they aren't this small anymore and they all have feathers on their wings.

Currently, our tentative plan is to butcher this group the weekend AFTER Labor Day (September 10th). That will put them just over 8 weeks old and it will hopefully give us a few more helping hands! If you are interested in helping out, keep that date open - I will confirm once I know how my coaching/bartending schedule shaking out.

We have a hen that is currently in chicken jail. She has been broody for about a month and can't seem to get her to snap out of it. For those of you that don't know, when a hen goes broody, they go into heat and want to hatch out eggs. Unfortunately, we don't have any fertilized eggs so we had to remove her from the laying coop and isolate her without a nest. We'll check her in a few days to see if she is ready to go back with the flock.

Starting to get things ready for Sunday! Still looking for people willing to help us out. I know it's going to be hot that day but we do have some jobs that allow you to be in air conditioning! 😉 We plan on starting around 10:30. Lunch, beverages, and fun will be provided. Message me if you are thinking about coming to help!

Received our first batch of Cornish Cross chicks this week and of course it happened during the coldest week of March! We had to get creative in order to try and keep them warm as this coop isn't insulated and the predicted high temps are lower than the average lows. The first night we suspended a milk house heater with a chain to blow extra heat in. Yesterday, I invested in a heating pad. So far, we only lost one chick and only had one incidence of pasty butt. Temps should improve but winter weather is expected the next two days.

Laying chicks are coming next week and the new coop isn't ready yet. We had a plan B to keep them in the garage in a stock tank. However, next week's temps are still below average and the garage will be too cold. We are looking at a plan C - possibly moving the tank into the house, in order to give them the best start. Stay tuned...
