Lunch, October 24.

Roasted butternut squash and burrata with crispy sage, toasted hazelnuts, and maple vinaigrette, paired with the 2024 Viognier. Then cider-braised short ribs over parmesan polenta with red w**e jus, paired with the 2023 Cabernet Franc Reserve.

Lunch is served at .w**es in the middle of a full day exploring Virginia w**e. We’re Barrel Thief, a w**e shop in Richmond, and on October 24 we’re taking a small group to three w**eries: the custom crush floor at Common Wealth Crush, the vineyard at Southwest Mountain with GM Dave Kostelnik, and a sit-down with w**emaker Matthieu Finot at King Family.

Luxury transportation from Richmond, coffee and bagels for the road, and a guided tasting at every stop. $450 per person. The trip is now sold out.

This is the part of Virginia W**e Month we love: one variety can mean completely different things depending on where you plant it.

Chatham’s Church Creek Chardonnay comes off the Eastern Shore, unoaked and grown as close to the Atlantic as you can gets. Ox-Eye’s Blanc de Blancs is estate grown Chardonnay from the Shenandoah Valley and made méthode champenoise.

Both open for tasting today.

Valley Road Cabernet Franc (Governor’s Cup Winner)

This bottling was made with the same juice as the w**e that won the Governor’s Cup this year, plus an additional year in French oak barrels to soften the tannins and round out the fruit even more.

Common Wealth Crush ‘Trot Rock’ Tannat (Governor’s Cup Gold)

This carbonic fermented Tannat is the fresher, easier drinking version of this highly tannic, bold red grape. Chill it slightly and let it rip!

Barrel Thief has been named a 2026 Steward of Virginia W**e, along with a Judges' Award for one of the highest scores from their judges.

The Stewards program recognizes shops and restaurants whose selections, programming, and advocacy bring Virginia w**e to their communities. Nominations doubled this year.

We're proud of it. But a w**e shop is only as good as the people making the w**e, and Virginia has gotten very good. The credit goes to the growers and w**emakers on our shelves.

October is Virginia W**e Month. Come drink some with us.

Here’s a fun pair for today’s tasting, 4 to 7.

One is a Brouilly (Beaujolais) from a single lieu-dit that was voted the best Gamay on earth. The other is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer’s declassified cuvée that legally can’t say Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the label.

Both made by people doing it the slow way. Both worth your Friday.

Ca’ del Baio’s Luna d’Agosto Chardonnay, all citrus and orchard fruit with no oak, next to Cantina del Pino’s Langhe Nebbiolo, which is basically young-vine Barbaresco fruit in a friendlier package. MIXED-CULTURE B**R: a new exploration of acidity Barrel Thief W**e & Provisions

Ashanti (5.5% abv) Blend of oak-aged, spontaneously-fermented ales conditioned on the African wild pepper known as “Gorilla pepper” by Brasserie Cantillon Bouwerij

Avalonia: Red - Batch 3 (5.6% abv) Blend of oak-aged mixed-culture ales conditioned on cherries and raspberries by Fox Farm Brewery

Bloom’d - Batch 5 (6.1% abv) Oak-aged saison primarily open-fermented with a Belgian ale yeast but with plenty of influence from the Fox Farm Brewery house mixed culture as well, which has been maintained (and evolved) for the last 8 or so years (much akin to a sourdough culture) by Fox Farm Brewery

Cadenza (6.3% abv) Blend of oak-aged, spontaneously-fermented ales from the 2021/2022 brewing season, bottle conditioned from February of 2024 by Fox Farm Brewery
