It is with profound sadness that we share the news of our mother’s passing. She transitioned peacefully at home after an illness, surrounded by love. We are grateful for the time with her.
I Kale Life is here because of Monica Esparza. She was our mother first and foremost and the matriarch of I Kale Life. She raised us in Southside, Richmond, as vegetarians, in the garden, with community, and with a profound sense of what it means to be mission-driven. The name I Kale Life comes from Renewal of Life Trust, which she started with our grandfather before we were even born.
She blessed I Kale Life, giving us permission to share her plant-based creations with you and entrusting us to honor recipes that meant so much to her. She believed deeply in the power of eating from the land, of community, and of freedom. Her legacy is in every life she lifted, the flavors she nurtured, the seeds she planted, and every bit of love she poured into our family.
Many of you knew our mother or met her at local markets and events. If so, you experienced her powerful energy, saw her loving smile, and felt her genuine heart. We miss her more than words can say, but we will carry her light forward through community around food, wellness, stewardship of the Earth, and love - just like she lived.
