Long before a spirit reaches your glass, someone plants the grain. ๐ŸŒฝ

Meet Tyler Oliver, a fourth-generation farmer at Oliver Farms in Smithfield, Virginia. We joined Tyler and Vaheritage grain project lead Shelley Sackier during corn harvest to get a closer look at where the grain-to-glass story begins.

The project helps connect Virginia growers with distillers and other grain artisans interested in sourcing locally grown heritage grains. Behind those connections are people, knowledge and a seasonโ€™s worth of work in the fields.

Meet Chuck Miller, a distiller who helped open doors for Virginiaโ€™s craft spirits industry.

Chuck founded Belmont Farm Distillery and Brewery in Culpeper in 1988. Alongside his wife, Jeanette, he also advocated for changes that allowed Virginia distilleries to offer onsite tastings and bottle sales, helping create the experiences visitors enjoy across the commonwealth today.

At Belmont Farm, that story remains rooted in agriculture. Corn, wheat and barley are grown on the family property, connecting the spirits in the bottle to the land where theyโ€™re made.

Now, Belmont Farm has been named Distillery of the Year at the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Associationโ€™s 2026 Ordinary Awards.

Congratulations to Chuck and the entire Belmont Farm team on this recognition, and thank you for helping shape Virginiaโ€™s distilling industry.

Thereโ€™s a lot happening at Ragged Branch right now, and I got a look inside what theyโ€™re building for the next chapter.

The new tasting room is still taking shape, but you can visit 92 Acres now for pours and to pick up bottles while it comes together.
