Learn about several promising new fungal disease-resistant cultivars in Tuesday’s workshop, and Extension Plant Pathologist Mizuho Nita of Virginia Tech explains favorable results of a two-year study comparing Biopesticides with an untreated control, and with a conventional commercial fungicide.

How can I farm my vineyard more sustainably and cost-effectively?
Tom Croghan of The Vineyards at Dodon will present two sessions on “Regenerative Viticulture: What Is It, and Putting it Into Practice,” new fungal disease-resistant hybrids will be discussed in three sessions on Tuesday, a panel of vineyard managers will discuss specific mechanized tools that save vineyard labor, and a new aerial drone sprayer evaluation will be discussed.

How do I farm to optimize my crop load for a soft market?
Eric Aellen of Linganore Vineyards will discuss understanding demand, prioritizing quality vs. quantity, precision pruning and cluster thinning strategies. John Saunders of Silver Creek Orchards will focus on balancing the vineyard by maintaining low vigor at harvest while producing a moderate crop of fruit, and ensuring vine nutrition through soil samples, tissue analyses, and spraying foliar nutrients.

Dr. Demi Perry of Virginia Tech will explain the importance of pH in winemaking, explore considerations for selecting a pH meter, emphasizing actionable tips and common pitfalls, so participants leave with greater understanding and confidence in managing pH in the cellar.

Measure heat stability and run a bentonite fining trial?
Molly Kelly, Extension Enologist of Penn State and Audrey Skinner, Chemist & Founder, Imbibe Solutions will explain why testing for protein stability is essential, how to properly set up a bentonite trial using a consistent, practical protocol, and why bentonite requirements can vary widely with vintage and varietal.
