Somewhere along the way, backyard chicken culture decided that apple cider vinegar (ACV) was the cure for everything short of taxes and bad life choices. ๐คฃ
And while the benefits of ACV are honestly pretty debatable to begin with, during a Texas summer there are exactly zero benefitsโand some very real risks.
When chickens get hot, they pant. Panting changes the balance of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate in their blood as their bodies work overtime to regulate temperature. That delicate balance is part of what keeps their blood pH stable.
Adding an acid (like ACV) to their only water source means you're asking an already heat-stressed bird to process extra acidity while it's working overtime just to stay cool.
โ ๏ธ In severe cases, this can contribute to acid-base imbalance (acidosis) and dehydrationโnot exactly what we want when it's 95ยฐ with 80% humidity.
Even if you swear ACV helps with gut health, sour crop, shiny feathers, world peace, or whatever Facebook told you this week... summer is not the time for it.
๐ ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐๐, many poultry keepers and veterinarians recommend supporting hydration with plain fresh water and, during extreme heat events, offering an electrolyte source.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonateโthe same bicarbonate the body naturally uses to help maintain pH balance. It can help replace what birds lose while heavily panting during hot weather. It's a quick effective, inexpensive electrolyte.
๐ง BUT... always offer a second waterer with plain, fresh water too. Chickens are surprisingly good at regulating what they need if given the choice.

โ๏ธ Shade access isn't optional.
โ๏ธ Ventilation beats a fancy coop every single time.
โ๏ธ Cool, clean water should be available all day.
โ๏ธ Frozen watermelon, peas, and lentils make. excellent cooling treats (and let's be honest, they're fun to watch them absolutely demolish). ๐๐ซ
At the end of the day, there isn't a magic supplement that beats good husbandry.
Sometimes the best thing you can add to your chickens' water in the summer is... absolutely nothing.
Stay cool out there, friends. Your birdsโand their tiny dinosaur kidneysโwill thank you. โค๏ธ๐โ๏ธ
