Welcome, everyone! With so many new followers here, I thought it was time to re-introduce myself and share a few updates about whatโs happening behind the scenes.
My name is Chelsea, and these are my chickens. ๐
I started Chelseaโs Chickens back in 2021, although since then weโve added turkeys and, most recently, a gooseโฆ so perhaps a name change is somewhere in our future. Who knows?
I was born and raised in Michigan, and at the ripe old age of 23, I packed up my car and moved to Texas with my mom. I met my now-husband, and Texas has been home ever since. We have one daughter, Elaina, who is without question the true ruler of the roost around here.
Growing up, I was heavily involved in 4-H. I showed rabbits, dairy cows, steers, and pigs, but rabbits were always my passion. Eventually, jobs, sports, college, and life took over, and my animal-showing days came to an end.
Years later, my husband and I worked and saved until we were finally able to purchase a little land of our own. Naturally, one of my first orders of business was securing some backyard chickens.
And then I discovered Silkies.
The rest, as they say, is history.
These last five years have brought an incredible amount of growth, but they haven't always been easy. I've navigated flock illnesses, hurricanes, floods, loss in my family, my own health challenges, more floods, fire, and plenty of lessons learned the hard way. Through all of it, I still haven't lost the love I have for these little birds.
They bring me an incredible amount of joy, and being able to share that joy, and everything I've learned along the way, with all of you has become something very special to me.
Over the last five years, what started as a backyard hobby has slowly and intentionally grown into a breeding program I am incredibly proud of. I've spent years learning, selecting, improving, and building the foundation for what I hope Chelsea's Chickens can become.
This year marks another big step: I have joined the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), and I finally feel ready to begin transitioning this little hobby of mine into a small business.
But firstโฆ I have one fairly major item on the agenda.
In just a couple of weeks, I'll be undergoing a hysterectomy and will need some time to recover. Since sitting still has never exactly been my specialty, I'm hoping to put some of that downtime to good use. My recovery plans include getting the Chelsea's Chickens website launched, designing and ordering shipping supplies, and tying up all of the little loose ends that come with taking this next step.
Which brings me to one of the updates I'm most excited to finally share:

There is still work to be done before we're ready, and my health and recovery have to come first, and the weather to cooperate! BUT, I'm incredibly excited about what's ahead.
Most importantly, I want to say a huge ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ธ ๐๐ผ๐ to everyone who has supported this little passion of mine over the years. Family, friends, customers, fellow breeders, followers, and even complete strangers who have cheered us on from afar.
Something that started with a few backyard chickens has grown into far more than I ever expected, and I'm incredibly grateful for the people who have grown along with us.
