Congrats to Haylee Harling on
purchasing Rawhide. We pulled him out of the pasture , she was able to lunge him by herself, halter him by herself, pick up his feet , put him up all by herself . When we say Riley makes youth horses - we mean it ! Rawhide is still a stallion , too , until he goes in to be gelded , hopefully this week . He’s a coming 2 yr old and totally behaved himself for this young lady . We are super excited to see what they do together ! She has taken lessons for two years and is ready to move up to a younger, faster barrel/ pole horse. She is working with a trainer and they have done a fine job with Haylee ! . Very impressed with her knowledge and skills . We look forward to pictures and videos of Her and Rawhide , as we’ve grown quite fond of him .

Foals grow to the size of the mother’s womb before birth. Some almost look like spiders when they are born, as their legs are so much more developed than their body size. The limbs complete much of their development in the womb and are largely a product of the nutrition received by the mare.

The cartilage in the leg rapidly proliferates during gestation, and its maturation to bone may be delayed in horses fed diets deficient in some minerals and vitamins. Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium, Copper and Zinc are especially important minerals, as are Vitamins A and D.

Overfeeding of carbohydrates and protein can also cause problems. Excess protein is treated like excess carbohydrate by the body and may cause hormonal imbalance as well as nutritional diseases. Overgrowing in the confining uterine environment caused by a delayed foaling date causes some limb deformities.

Genetics
Sound legs start with the mating of a sound stallion to a sound mare. They each contribute one half of the whole. Some horses are said to be very prepotent, meaning they are capable of stamping their characteristics on their offspring no matter what the genetics of the other horse. Sometimes, we see exceptional “nicks” or good combinations that consistently produce good horses. In some cases outcrossing is desirable as it produces heterosis or hybrid vigor.

Riley enjoyed the weekend . Camped out , giving old and young alike a ride . No one even knew he was in camp . Never a peep from him. Stood tied next to Oz our gelding all 4 days . Kids climbing all over him , petting , brushing him , camp was almost full . Passed many horses on the trails . Always a gentleman , even when the mares squealed and kicked at him . I kept him a safe distance away but they “ know” he’s all male . Impeccable disposition . Never a worry about him . First time I’ve ridden in a year ! Two surgeries and life got in the way .

We have moved to the new farm ! Still in Richmond, IN , just up the rd from where we were . We bought our own farm ! It was time , and we were blessed with finding this place in this crazy market . God definitely had a plan . We will be ready for mares by next spring . Lots of updates and remodeling going on . We will be able to cut our own hay , and the horses be outside grazing , instead of stuck in stalls . We have a spring fed creek , runs all year , lots of pasture . Several barns for shelter . We will have stalls inside one barn for owners that prefer indoor accommodations for their gals . Or paddocks for those who prefer to be out while here. Lots of large trees for shade in paddocks . Definitely a horse paradise . While it will be a work in progress , it’s so nice to be able to use it the way we need to , and not be told no . Ownership has its benefits. We are looking forward to 9 foals in 2023 , so stay tuned for more updates !
