🌈⭐️ Cowbird vs. Cattle Egret

Did you know that the white birds following cattle herds aren’t actually "cowbirds"? They’re cattle egrets, and while they may seem like the same thing, a true cowbird is a very different creature!

Cowbirds are beneficial to cattle by eating insects, but they’re notorious for their parasitic nesting habits. They lay their eggs in other birds' nests, often kicking out the rightful eggs. A couple of years ago, I found a baby cowbird on the ground beneath a bluebird nest—too big for the nest but not yet able to fly. Sadly, its "parents" had moved on, leaving it behind.

Cattle egrets, on the other hand, are African relatives of herons and are welcome guests, feasting on insects stirred up by livestock.

So now, whenever someone mentions "cowbirds," I have to ask—do you mean the good ones or the bad ones?
