Friday afternoon was a perfect fall day to harvest the rest of our winter squash! Making piles of squash gave the feeling of stashing clutches of eggs in the field. After everything was harvested we loaded all of the squash in the greenhouse to cure and be protected against the potential frost this weekend. Erin also spent the end of the day draping our pepper plants with remay for some frost protection as well. Have a great weekend, community!

The warm temperatures sent us another flush of tomatoes this week. Cherry tomatoes, slicers and heirloom tomatoes are stocked in the farm stand today, along with pears, apples, winter squash and pie pumpkins, onions, shallots, peppers, greens, beets, cucumbers, zucchini, micros, fresh herbs and all of our salad mixes. It’s fall farm perfection!

We have started the winter salad greens planting marathon! The first of the last four weeks of transplanting is complete! Each week between now and mid-October we are racing to get all the lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula, chards and mustard greens planted that will fill the salad bags from December through April. In the past two days we transplanted 3000 lettuces, 6000 spinach, 1000 plugs of mustard greens, and 500 plugs of baby kale. More of the same for the next three Fridays. Thanks for cheering us on!

We grew a teeny tiny amount of potatoes this season and got them all dug up this week. While we love the opportunity to tap into the agricultural roots of Ridgefield, land of the Spudders, on a small scale farm such as ours we usually have to prioritize higher value crops (and crops that don’t hog the field for as many months)! However, potatoes do work some soil chemistry magic and have been found to reduce populations of symphylans, a small white centipede that can do serious damage to many of our crops. We’ve started to see more symphylan damage in the last couple of years so we know it is time to start rotating through a few beds of potatoes each season. CSA members will get some of our spuds next week and we will also be sourcing from other local organic farms for the farm stand over the winter.

The Week 24 CSA shares are serving up fall! We hope you are also welcoming the changing of the seasons today. Here’s to slightly cooler weather, the start of the leaves changing, and our favorite time of year for fresh eating - summer crops are still here and the fall veggies are starting to roll in. Current CSA members, be sure to sign up for the winter CSA before this weekend to ensure that you get a spot if you are wanting to eat with us this winter. To access it, you need to be logged in to your Barn2Door account. We’ll be opening up sign ups to the rest of the community starting on Sunday, September 28th. Everyone else, stay tuned for more info this weekend! Also, the farm stand is loaded with all our favorite veggies as well. Swing by!

We are loving the apples this season and hope you are too! When we came to Ridgefield in 2011 our farm had eight apple trees on it, planted by the family that built our house in the 1970s. Since then, Jason has planted probably another 50 fruit trees. We have been working on cold storage for the apples so that we can continue to offer them through the farm stand for as long as possible. Is an apple pie or applesauce in your future? We also have boxes of “seconds” apples in our online store. An apple a day… etc, etc!

Carrots are one of the trickiest and most rewarding crops to grow on an organic farm. They don’t love to be transplanted; their seeds are slow to germinate; and they don’t grow a large leaf canopy until they are almost full grown - all dynamics that make them a crop that does not compete well with w**ds in the field. When we prep the bed just right, and w**d at just the right time, we can be rewarded with one of the best fresh flavors of the farm. This past week we had some glorious late summer weather! We plant bunching greens twice each season (kales, chards, collards) and the first pick of the fall plantings is always such a joy. The plants are lush and happy and it makes for fun and easy harvesting. Coupled with the not-too-hot sunshine-y days it also made for happy farmers!
