We made it through “Quitin’ Month!” I’ve been farming now for a little over 20 years and without fail, every August feels like just a little too much. This season we cruised on through August because of our amazing team (even though it is still feeling like just a bit too much on some days). Thanks for cleaning those onions, Emma! 😉 Glad to be doing this farm thing together!

The barn swallows joined me out in the field last Friday to catch insects that were turned up during my mowing. This time of year has us busy mowing down summer crops and cover crops to make way for the final plantings of the season. Sparks of joy from my little swallow entourage.

It’s a Farm Cat Friday! Meet Garbage, First of Her Name, Keeper of Shares, Guardian of the Lone Shack, Last of the Great First Pets, Official Greeter to All Who Shop Local.

If you have been to our farm stand you’ve probably met Garbage, one of our original farm cats who was lovingly named after Dwight Schrute’s barn cat on the TV Show, The Office. She and her brother showed up in our barn as kittens nine years ago and we’ve been loving her ever since. Show her some love too next time you see her!

Yesterday we pulled in all of the storage onions and shallots for the season, loaded them up onto the namesake red truck, and unloaded them all into our old propagation house to cure. It was a full and dusty day that made me feel grateful for how amazing a group of humans can be!

Throw back to earlier this summer when we had a visit from a dear family friend, Gabe, who is about to start a PhD at UC Santa Cruz in the Entomology department. Farm kid Lyla, also obsessed with insects and all the creepy crawlers on the farm, was in heaven. We did a bug focused farm walk (or farm crawl) and discovered many little farm friends (and a few farm enemies 😉). Sending cheers to Gabe as he begins his program this month with research into ants, pheromones, and their impact on native pollinators.
