carrots have become one of my favorite things to grow ✨

They become sweeter after being touched by frost because the starches in them convert to sugars to keep them from getting damaged by the cold. Our raised beds are currently filled with carrots that will be pulled late winter and early spring. They were planted at the end of summer and beginning of fall. Carrots typically take about 3 months from planting to pulling, although they do grow slower when the days get short and the temps drop.

I’ll start planting our spring carrots in February and will continue planting through March. Between my winter carrots and my spring carrots, I’m hopeful we will have a continuous harvest for the rest of winter and all of spring.

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! After Christmas comes down at our house, we start focusing on summer and spring crops. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to try to be better about this page.. it consistently gets away from me and I’m sorry for that. I’d love to be posting once a day, but I will be happy if I can commit to once a week. Yall hold me to it, now! Next week I’ll start sowing spring flowers and hot peppers for summer and in February I’ll plant our tomato seeds. Those will all stay inside for a little while until the weather is consistently warmer. Right now my seedling rack inside is filled with spinach that needs to be transplanted into the spring plot outside and I have several bags of spring and summer bulbs I’d like to get in the ground before the weekend us up. That likely will not happen but I’m gonna try. Mr and Mrs Claus have been a little preoccupied for the last month but now they’re gonna get back to farming. Doing my best to juggle all the balls, I’m sure you are too.. even if in different ways. We can do it! 🫶🏼

our slicing tomato season is coming to an end, which is bittersweet for us here on the farm ❤️‍🩹

we started all the tomato plants from seed in February and transplanted them out into the field in April. We have baby-ed them for the last five and a half months. We had around 220 tomato plants this year. It is a labor of love but we love to do it. We are already looking forward to next year’s tomato crop and trying some new varieties. We are also looking forward to being able to focus on some infrastructure around the farm that needs fixing and continuing to work on getting our fall crops going.

if you got a chance to taste one of our tomatoes, we hope you enjoyed them as much as we do. The second photo in this set is of my favorite one we grew this year — a sweet tangerine tomato. The look and taste is just divine. If you haven’t tried one.. you should 😘

Hey friends! We hope you had a good holiday. We have been busy planting for fall — pumpkins, winter squash, beans, and root veggies along with some flowers. The rain has helped us out a bit, but boy has it been hot and humid.

This week we are harvesting tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, cucumbers (pickling and slicing), green and purple beans, and okra. We have eggs, but are running low on candles and honey. We plan to make more candles over the weekend if we can find the time.

As always, thank you for being here and for supporting your local farmer ❤️✨🌿

The forecast is calling for rain for the next several days, which is great news for the garden but not for the farmstand schedule 🫤

We will update here closer to opening time and let you know how it’s looking. If it’s really coming down, we will keep it closed until the weather clears. We are gonna have to play it by ear. The plan is to open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5 PM until 8 PM.

Thank you for your support and understanding ❤️

We are so grateful for you!

We tried something new this spring and planted our first succession of cucumbers in our very favorite raised beds. I love using these beds because they allow me to make use of space I probably wouldn’t otherwise. We are growing on a small amount of space compared to most farms and so we try to use every little bit we can. I was able to fit 20 cucumber plants in each bed. These beds are by the tree line and I was hopeful it would protect the cucumbers from the heat of the summer and allow me to harvest them a little longer. Based on my math, I ended up getting an extra few weeks out of them.

I also loved the look of them in this space 🌿✨🥒🌼

We will be harvesting the last of this succession of cucumbers this week (English slicing and Supremo pickling) — I will have more pickling cucumbers on the way, but this will be all of the English slicers until next spring.

We will have them on the farmstand this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5 PM to 8 PM and we’ll be dropping off downtown on Wednesday afternoon.

Let us know if you would like some of swing by the farmstand later this week! 🫶🏼
