Rivendell Meadows Farm

Rivendell Meadows Farm Nestled in the heart of Kentucky, our farm is a vibrant sanctuary where a bit of mischief fills the air every day. I was a Military wife..

Our commitment to animal welfare is at the core of what we do. We also cultivate high-quality hay that supports our farm and the community. schlepping my farm wherever the Army moved us for my husbands career. We finally retired from active duty late fall of 2015. So far my little farm and livestock have survived 5 moves. I love my animals and am blessed to be Shepherdess to these wonderful beings

. We offer mostly raw fleeces and fiber from our alpacas and and mohair from our Angora goats, specialising in extra long when available. We occasionally have roving, cloud and bundled locks available as well.

Today I'll be in the hayfield raking hay because farming and livestock care are all day, every day, and the weather says cut and harvest hay, you do it! It looks like we'll have a good yield this spring. Diesel and fertilizer have gone up so much that our prices will have to reflect that just to break even.

I wanted to give an update on Harry, my little guy with the broken leg. Unfortunately, due to the extent of his injuries, I chose to euthanize. It's a sad day when you feel that's the best choice for such a young one. He had just turned 2 in April. The leg break itself would have been easily handled with pinning and casting. I'll include his rads here and a short note from my vet to better explain what was going on. I could have tried, but with the months of rehab needed and the low percentage that it would have been successful, I made the best choice I could. 😔 I am very blessed to have a vet with a mobile X-ray, so I didn't have to move him.

""Diagnostic Findings:
Radiographs were obtained to further evaluate the extent of injuries. Imaging confirmed a distal oblique tibial fracture of the right rear limb and
additionally revealed a sacroiliac fracture with dorsal displacement of the spinal column/pelvic structures, indicating severe traumatic injury to the
pelvis and lumbosacral region.""

1st photo leg break, fairly easy fix
2nd photo: Sacroiliac fracture, poor prognosis

Farm happenings.. rain has put us behind on hay but we finally dropped the field yesterday so we'll be in the hayfield for the next several days. I've been able to start shearing again now that the goats are drying out. Both good things..

Now the not so good things.

We had to say goodbye to our Pyrenees Samson. He was almost 14 and had a tumor in his nasal cavity. Most likely Osteosarcoma, or nasal adenocarcinoma. Due to the location and his age there wasn't a lot we could have done. He was a good boy and will be missed . Just a big powderpuff ❤️

One of my young male goats. Harry. Just broke his right rear leg. 😑. It's a bad break above the hock. Vet coming in the morning to do x-rays so we can figure out what the options are.

Otherwise normal fence fixings and machinery woes. Life on the farm is lots of things but dull isn't one of them.

Getting some shearing done today. I think Archie is a little chunky and obviously so so dirty.. ugh

Busy times here lately! Spring on the farm brings lots of repairs, equipment prep for mowing and hay production, and of course... shearing season! Alpacas are done, and I've started goats now. Mix that in with our CMO season starting up (competitive mounted orienteering) I've not had much time for FB. The fields have been fertilized and sprayed for broadweed, cha-ching. Not to mention $5.50 diesel.. cha-ching.. Time to get those flower beds cleaned out and the garden started.. ;) How is everyone else this spring? !

Keep outdoor food, water bowls clean to prevent distemper
Raccoons in Russellville, Ark., have tested positive for distemper recently, and veterinarian Sarah Gilkerson says pet owners should keep their animals' distemper vaccines up to date. Raccoons with distemper may seem disoriented or more willing to interact with people, and they can spread the paramyxovirus through oral or nasal secretions, so it's important to keep pets' outdoor water and food bowls clean and disinfected and to keep pets away from wildlife, Dr. Gilkerson says.
