Celebrating Black Poetry Day with environmental poet Camille T. Dungy’s observations on interconnectedness within the web of life of which we are all a part.

After the reintroduction of gray wolves
to Yellowstone and, as anticipated, their culling
of deer, trees grew beyond the deer stunt
of the mid century. In their up reach
songbirds nested, who s**ttered
seed for underbrush, and in that cover
warrened snowshoe hare. Weasel and water shrew
returned, also vole, and came soon hawk
and falcon, bald eagle, kestrel, and with them
hawk shadow, falcon shadow. Eagle shade
and kestrel shade haunted newly-berried
runnels where deer no longer rummaged, cautious
as they were, now, of being surprised by wolves. Berries
brought bear, while undergrowth and willows, growing
now right down to the river, brought beavers,
who dam. Muskrats came to the dams, and tadpoles.
Came, too, the night song of the fathers
of tadpoles. With water striders, the dark
gray American dipper bobbed in fresh pools
of the river, and fish stayed, and the bear, who
fished, also culled deer fawns and to their kill scraps
came vulture and coyote, long gone in the region
until now, and their s**t s**ttered seed, and more
trees, brush, and berries grew up along the river
that had run straight and so flooded but thus dammed,
compelled to meander, is less prone to overrun. Don’t
you tell me this is not the same as my story. All this
life born from one hungry animal, this whole,
new landscape, the course of the river changed,
I know this. I reintroduced myself to myself, this time
a mother. After which, nothing was ever the same.

Today we celebrate and honor the original keepers of the land this farm was built upon, this unceded (stolen) land of the Tsalagi (Cherokee) Nation.

We acknowledge the elders both past and present, as well as future generations. This acknowledgement demonstrates the process of working to dismantle the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism. A portion of all proceeds is donated to Cherokee nonprofits as an offering of reparations.

✨I WONDER✨ …how are mountains made?
Foliage plates floating on a muddy mantle collide, crash, and crumple!
480 million years later we’re lucky to be living in the foothills of this beautiful, chaotic terrain!

We always offer eggs, and the kids enjoy adding a bit of enrichment by “hiding” them in tree nooks. This summer, we began including tubs of water to the trail cam snack station. Trail cam retrieval is definitely a favorite experience!

🕸️Experiential learning in nature allows us to make connections to a variety of academic studies and other aspects of life outside of the forest.
🕸️More importantly, forest school supports students in learning how to learn, form opinions, and defend ideas. These critical thinking skills are needed now more than ever to create a more just and sustainable world!
