And bloom goes the dynamite. Delayed but not denied. After a dogfight with frost, and warmth that followed in fits and starts, we have pinot noir and chardonnay in bloom during a gorgeous week of sunny weather, all but ensuring proper fruitset on all flowering shoots of these varieties. Spring in the Mid-Atlantic is rarely gentle and uniform. Farming is never easy. If you can farm fine wine grapes in NJ, you can do it anywhere on the planet. We're doing it in 2026 once again, battle tested.

After the first buds on this young Pinot Noir vine were frosted off nearly a month ago, nothing else happened. No swelling, no growth, no sign of life for weeks. The weather warmed, the vine didn't budge, and I thought I'd lost this one and the row of its fragile little siblings (again). Then I though about how little rain we had. Even though there have been long stretches of cool weather, it was also dry weather, and the drought monitor has been trending in the wrong direction. We haven't had significant rain since the frost. So we tractored the water tank out into the field once again. We ran the well dry again. And we gave 1,900 vines a drink, one at a time, again, for the 4th time in 5 seasons. Resusitacion? I paid a man for three days to do what nature should have done on its own, when I needed him for the predictable tasks. It's worth it when you come back a few days later and the little one is reaching up with new green growth to tell you "I'm still here."

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal.

We lost about half of our vintage last Monday. It's the third time in seven years that frost or freeze devastated our 40 acres of vines. You never get used to the horror of watching newly emerged shoots full of life and vigor and promise take on the appearance of late autumn overnight. I haven't set foot in the fields that took the worst hit since it happened. It's too painful to look upon. Many of our peers have it worse this time around, so we refrained from the woeful postmortem. We are grateful to have half.

Frost events do not kill the vine, just the dream of a bountiful vintage. When the primary bud is destroyed, a second bud emerges in its place some time later. There is a time to die, but in some circumstances a time to be reborn. That time has mercifully arrived in our vine yards. I can go back and look now. There is still much to look forward to.
