Blue Burst is the color for 2024. Honeybees can see colors and sight is one of the senses they use to locate their home colony. So, it’s good for a beekeeper to mix up the colors of the hives bodies so the bees don’t get confused and stumble into the wrong hive. Changing the color also helps me to recognize how old the boxes are at a glance, and It’s kind of fun picking out a new color for each year.

This is a field of goldenrod. Goldenrod is an important fall pollen source for honey bees. Goldenrod is not responsible for your allergies as the pollen is too heavy to ride on the wind. Ragweed, a very similar looking plant, is causing your allergic reaction.

This time of year, most beekeepers are busy treating their bees against Varroa Mites. Varroa Mites entered the country back in the late 1980's from Asia. In 2007, when Colony Collapse Disorder was discovered, Varroa was determined to be the cause. This mite lives off the hemolymph of the adult honey bee, while feeding on, and injuring, developing larva. It would like human beings being dogged by a tick the size of a dinner plate attached to them and sucking their blood.
The challenge for beekeepers is to try to kill a little bug living on a larger bug. Fortunately, scientists have developed, and continue to develop, a grand arsenal of organic products with which we can use to combat the Varroa Mite.

Did you know that honey bees have five eyes?

While it is easy to recognize the two large eyes on the side of honey bees head, there are actually 3 smaller eyes in the center of their head. These three ocelli eyes are used for navigation and orientation, while the two compound eyes are used for seeing shapes in colors in their environment. It is very important that honey bees have all five eyes to be productive and efficient!
