“Monthly Health Maintenance in Show Lambs & Goats”
Monthly Health management is absolutely essential for success with your show animals. Every 30 days you should be doing the following preventative measures.
1. De-Worming: I recommend a three way rotation of the following compounds. Lead off with Cydectin oral drench (moxidectin), followed by Prohibit (Levamisole hydrochloride), and then followed by Dectomax Injectable (doramectin). Follow label directions and always use a good probiotic paste or drench for 3 days anytime you deworm.
2. Vitamin/trace mineral injections: B12/B1 combination- draw up 3 cc of b12 injectable first, then draw up 1 cc of b1 (thiamine HCL) injectable in the same syringe. Rock it back and forth gently to completely mix it, before injecting the dose intramuscularly. You can alternate this with B Complex injections every other month for a complete B vitamin therapy.
3. BoSe Injection (Selenium/Tocopherol): Lambs and goats two weeks of age and older- 1 cc per 40 lbs. body weight, sub Q or intramuscular. This is a minimum preventative maintenance dose.
Pro Tip- I do not recommend giving all of these injections and drenches at once for convenience. Space these out one to two weeks apart. Write your date down and do it again 30 days later. The B vitamins partner with worming just fine, but I don’t like giving BoSe, when I’m giving Thiamine injections.
Keep them thriving and developing to maximize their genetic potential. Thanks and good luck with your Show Stock!
