We hope you had a great holiday spent with those you love. As we welcome the New Year, we want to take a moment to thank you for being part of our Herd. Your support of our ranch, our family, and our way of life truly means more to us than we can say.

We had a great Christmas on the Ranch spent with family. I enjoy this time of year and rarely leaving the Ranch as it makes our life slow down a bit while enjoying the simplicity of everyday Ranch duties.

That being said, we are probably the busiest we’ve ever been going into the new year. We are working around the clock to finish the waterline project at our new Cattle Feeding Center before the temperature drops and we are unable to work with Mother Nature. We are also hustling to improve the calving facilities in our new Ranch up north where we will be calving all of our heifers this year. Thankfully, the weather has been more mild (but wet) this year, so we have had the opportunity to extend our Fall projects later into the year. As Dad always famously says… “Never been accused of not being lucky…”

At the home Ranch, we are starting to bring the Mama cows home as we are less than 2 months away from the start of calving season.

We hope you and yours are healthy, happy and well fed going into the New Year. Thank you for being by our side as we ring in another year of bringing you the best beef, straight from the 5C.

The Herd5c has been with the Farm to Food Pantry initiative since the very beginning. Their commitment to this program has provided our community with a reliable source of high-quality protein, helping us offer not just food, but nourishment and dignity to the families we serve.

As everyone wanders home for the holidays, I wanted to share this story of when my Aunt Robin came back to the Ranch in 1988 for Thanksgiving.

It was standard procedure to hop on the Greyhound bus to get from Seattle to Ritzville whenever the kids needed to come home for holidays or Spring & Summer work. As Robin’s bus pulled into Ritzville that Fall, she realized there was a bit of commotion coming from the passengers ahead of her and panic from the bus driver. She followed everyone’s gaze out the window as they pulled off of I90 and realized the reason for the wide eyed and open mouth stares. It was a masked stagecoach robber on his horse, staging a heist, for the “prettiest little filly” aboard the Greyhound Bus. After a quarter miles chase under the freeway, the bus rolled to a stop and the cowboy came pounding on the door demanding it open. The bus driver, fearful for his life, refused to open it. That’s when Robin came up from the back of the bus, reassuring the driver that it was safe, and that her Dad was just really excited to have her home.

Grandpa Bill loved the theatrics of the old western movies and was always looking for an opportunity to incorporate it into our small town of Ritzville. He usually enlisted the help of my Grandma to finalize his costumes and make his signs. You might not be greeted by a big grey horse and a cowboy this holiday season, but nonetheless, we hope your travels bring you closer to the ones you love 🤍

My Grandpa Bill was about as cowboy as they come. Think old western John Wayne movies. He was a cattleman, but he was also one hell of a horseman. He’s the reason I spent most of my childhood on the back of a horse, and really a big reason why I’m becoming an equine veterinarian. He taught me almost everything I know, from starting a c**t to riding pastures and trailing cows home. I owe a lot of my knowledge to him, and wish he was still around to tell me how do to things his way. Before my grandpa passed away, he nonchalantly told me that he was going to come back as a hawk so he could keep an eye on me and make sure I stayed on the straight and narrow. Ever since he passed away in 2020, I see hawks and hawk feathers on big days, when I’m starting a new chapter, and of course when we are branding.

I started my first c**t in 2016, and have started a couple since. I spend a long time on the ground with them before I think about swinging a leg over them, because honestly, at the age of 24 I’m too dang old and fragile to get dumped. I’ve been working on this c**t for a couple weeks now and have been thinking about getting on him, but keep making excuses not to. I was walking him back to my trailer last night, and as I went to pull open the gate, a new hawk feather sat on the ground between me and my c**t. Probably just coincidence, but it told me I needed to toughen up and jump on him, so I did. First time on Jet, and he was a good boy. Thanks Papa!
