Country Garden Farm: We purchased our farm in 1975. We operated the farm conventionally for the first 12 years, growing corn and soybeans and raising a few cows, pigs and chickens. In 1986, we ceased farming operations. Then in 1992, we grew some convention sweet corn. This was successful for us and we decided to grow some other vegetables and bedding plants. That same year we built our first two greenhouses. At this time, our operation was not totally organic. We were using organic insect controls but we were using synthetic fertilizers. In 1999 we decided to convert to total organic practices. For the next four years we used no fertilizers to cleanse our soil. Then in 2003 we started our first summer CSA program. Also at this time we applied for organic certification which we received that summer. In 2005, we stopped growing bedding plants so that we could focus on our vegetable production. In the fall of 2006 we offered our first winter CSA followed in the spring of 2007 by our first spring CSA program. Thus we are now operating our CSA every week of the year. What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is intended for the local community to support locally grown products and build a close relationship with the farmer. A person buys a share of the farms yield by paying upfront. In return, they receive a weekly basket of in season vegetables. This helps out the farmer with the expenses (cost of seeds, labor, fertilizer, ect) to run the farm and produce the crops. Country Garden & Farm Market offers a variety of different vegetable subscription programs. We offer a spring CSA program, a summer CSA program, a winter CSA program and a year round CSA program. Our summer CSA program is a 20 week program that starts in June and ends in October. Since the summer program starts at the beginning of June, the shares will consist of lettuce, spinach, greens, herbs and whatever other early vegetables we have ready (beets, turnips, radishes, peas to name a few). As the summer goes along, we will be harvesting broccoli, cabbage and zucchini then move into cucumbers, summer squash, peppers and sweet corn. Other crops we grow are green beans, potatoes, melons, winter squash and pumpkins to name a few. The winter CSA program starts immediately after the summer program and runs for 20 weeks. The shares of the winter program are pretty much the same every week. The shares consist of one bag of lettuce mix, one bag of spinach, one bag of other greens, one herb and one other item such as potatoes, winter squash, baby bok choy or onions. The spring CSA program is a short 12 week program that starts in March and ends in May. This program is designed to bridge our winter and summer programs. The shares are pretty much the same as the winter shares. They consist of one bag of lettuce mix, one bag of spinach, one bag of other greens, one herb and one other item.
