Meet the newest floofs on the farm! What a welcome addition amidst SO MUCH GLOOMY RAIN AND MUD. 😅🥰🥰🥰

We got these hatching eggs from Run Valley Farms semi-local to us (in Arkport), because why not refresh the flock genetics while testing out our replacement hatching kit incubators!

I’m a wee bit obsessed with all the fluffy cheeks in this batch. We’ll be expecting lots of fun new shell shades and speckle patterns when these babies grow up! Pray for mostly hens for me! 😅

(Also, if you want to enjoy this little joy for yourself, get on the waitlist for our hatching kit rentals! We are officially back in business after insurance changes to being able to offer these to our community! Get on the waitlist below, ASAP, because last time we offered the kits they sold out all available slots in about 2 hours. No joke! 😅)

(or use the quick links in our bio!)

And no, we did NOT plan on an Easter chick hatch, it was a happy accident! 🥰

Gardening is a lesson in persistence, and we choose lessons over failure here.

This tray of very old pepper seeds was clearly a bit too tired to germinate this time around, so I’m reseeding. Using tweezers just makes the job a tiny bit faster, because I can both place the seeds AND push them down to the right depth under the soil in one motion. Since I already sprinkled dirt over the first round of seeds, I don’t want to add more and lose the divot in the soil blocks for watering purposes.

Comment below and tell me garden seeds give you the most trouble, and you'd rather buy them than start your own seeds! I usually think herbs and brassicas are the biggest pains in the butt, and I'll admit I prefer to buy those if I can. 😅

(Remember: there is no failure in gardening, only quitting!)

Ever wanted to help shear a sheep? Join our extended farm school and you can!

Ok, well...you got me. YOU cannot. YOUR KIDS, however, can. 😉

Due to an overwhelming number of requests to make it possible to come to some weeks and not all, I'm opening up a "come try it" option where YOU CAN REGISTER FOR ONE WEEK AT A TIME FOR OUR EXTENDED 12-WEEK FARM SCHOOL! Registration for that week will close Tuesday of the same week so I have enough time to prep and get supplies together as needed for extra kids. Please note that some weeks obviously carry over a little from week to week, so you may miss some if you choose, for example, "part 3" of a topic, but I promise you'll still get more than enough out of even just that one lesson!

See our new week-by-week options and the bundled full session deal at the following page:

Send a message or an email with any questions! 😊

(Oh, and depending on the weather, the sheep shearing will likely be sometime in May during one of the Animal Husbandry weeks. I'll keep you posted!)

Someone has something to say… and they’re not even officially born yet! Turn the volume UP! 🥰😍😍😍

Did you know that when the chicks inside the eggs hear peeping it always seems to magically encourage the rest to start hatching? I always start talking to the babies around day 18, and by today they’re starting to have conversations with each other even while still inside the eggs!

(And no, this NEVER gets old to me! 🥰)

A trend I wish more people would jump on…”shopping” from your own freezer.

I made a double batch of mac and cheese and pulled pork months ago and stuck a mixed pan of it in the freezer for another day. Pulled it out, let it thaw/cook at 170 for a while (I didn’t time it lol), and dinner is ready.

Half a second to allow me to brag? I never ended up saucing this pulled pork, and yet my kids gladly devour it as it is. When the base is this good (our own pork raised here), you don’t need as much “extra” to hit all the right taste buds I guess!

Hearty helpings all around, and two kids with very happy bellies tonight!

And one happy mama for one less day of “oh crap, what’s for dinner?” 😅🙈

What’s your favorite way to eat pulled pork?

Paisley is happy to share that she has a new best friend! Harriet, a pure Jersey cow, joined our farm in late summer. She needs a little TLC to gain some weight in hopes that she will be the start of a small Jersey herd here! 🤞🏼

Autumn always comes early on a farm…

Ordered replacement chicks to rebuild the flock after predators are STILL taking out birds here and there despite them not free ranging anymore…

Already been building our hay stock to get us through winter and hearing about the hay harvest struggles from the hay farmers…

And feeling both those sudden cool temps AND the autumn molt in full force…our sad little stressed out flock has decided it is time to take their break from egg laying early this year. There are ways to trick their bodies into laying through winter, but we believe in letting nature do what it needs to do, so our hens will get their usual winter break for as long as they need it, while we eagerly await these babies to grow up and start laying, likely by January/February.

To say this has been a taxing and unfriendly summer for all farmers is an understatement! 🤦🏻‍♀️
