Butterflies need more than pretty flowers 🦋 A few things I like to remember:
🐛 Host plants feed caterpillars, so chewed leaves are not always a bad thing.
🌿 Milkweed is especially important if you want to support monarchs.
🌸 Nectar plants like coneflowers, asters, and goldenrod help adult butterflies.
☀️ Sunny spots work best because butterflies love warmth.
🍂 I leave some stems standing longer at the end of the season for wildlife.
A butterfly garden feels more natural when it’s allowed to be a little imperfect 🌼

The farm stand is open. Today we have rhubarb, a rhubarb crumble, lettuce, asparagus, spring onions, and lilac jelly. In case of rain I will move everything to the front step where it will be covered.

Preserving spring onions for the winter is so easy. One of my favorite ways to do this is to slice them up, sauté them in a bit of butter and olive oil, and then pack into freezer bags to store in the freezer until I want them.

Good late morning, neighbors. Today at the farm stand there is rhubarb, eggs, spring onions, lilac jelly, and a few pretty purple bouquets. There is one asparagus but it is already spoken for so please do not take it.

A note about our eggs. They are unwashed. All eggs are laid with a protective coating so I leave them unwashed until right before use. Eggs are perfectly fine at room temp but will last longer if you put them in the fridge when you get them home.

Today’s bouquet includes lilacs, Virginia Waterleaf(also known as bee’s friend), catmint, columbine, false blue indigo, and a fern. Please take the whole jar. I have plenty, so you can keep it to reuse or return it when you are done with it.

I plan to have the farm stand open Thursdays and Fridays when we are in town. We do go up to the cabin quite a few times during the summer, but I will let you all know when we will not be open.

A big thank you to everyone that stopped by yesterday. You made my day!!

Yesterday I spent some time collecting dandelion seeds to grow micro-greens. All parts of the dandelion are edible however as the greens get bigger they get bitter. By growing micro-greens you can pick them when they are young and tender. Toss them in a salad, in an omelette, on a sandwich, or anywhere you would use greens. Dandelion greens are packed with vitamins and minerals

The are so many harbingers of spring, and I look forward to and love them all. However, it is the return of the orioles that makes my heart sing. Their coloring, their sweet song, the way they wait in the nearby tree taking turns at the feeder, their beautifully woven nests…..truly, what is not to love about this sweet bird?
