We decided to meander in Saumur for our last day. We had one suggestion provided by Sommelier Bastien Gervais from Christophe Hay Restaurant: “meet our friend Julien”.
Following our intuition, we experienced the perfect ending ! Julien Pougnant is the owner of both la Tonnelle Wine Shop and La Tonnelle Wine Bar. The word Tonnelle (Bower, Gazebo, Canopy, or Pergola) is inspiring and grasps you to chill in a natural shaded area with wine, food, and good company ! Julien’s friend was featuring his wines: Maison Fronteau, artisan/boutique wine creator. Gwendal, Dampierre-sur-Loire’s Mayor, delighted us with his wines and his physical asset (labels count!!!) ! Both la Tonnelle Cave à Vin and La Tonnelle Bar à vin are a must visit. Thank you Julien for your warm welcome and for representing ferociously the best wines of Saumur & Loire as well as top French producers. Cheers to you.

Amongst the 150 000+ restaurants in France, only 660 are Michelin awarded, and only 84 with two Stars. We SpaceXed in the ONLY 2 Stars within the Centre-Val de Loire Region. The expedition to an unknown world is exciting. The level of service feels like an unconditional love from a friend. The beauty of the dishes is multidimensional and surreal. Pleasure lasted more than 3 hours for the delight of our Epicurean Foodonauts.
Chef Hay's roots are from the region. Chef Hay embraces as many ingredients as possible from the Loire Valley. Chef Hay's passion for this region generates its respect for it.
It was a spiritual exploration for me. I went to school in Angers. I lived in Orleans. My late brother was a butcher as Chef Hay's Father. My Father's ashes float in the Loire River demonstrating his love to the region, to the Loire River and his fishing prowess.
As the world is speeding up and we are getting ready to conquer the Universe, time stopped for 3 hours. The results provided by Chef Hay and his entire team seemed unreel and impossible to reach, but it was not a dream. Our 3 hours lunch was an out of life experience that allowed us to immerse ourselves in a French Landmark, well anchored in earth: The LOIRE VALLEY played for us by CHEF HAY. THANK YOU.

Sightseeing in the Loire Valley !
Breathtaking and fairy-tale splendors !
The Château of Chambord, the emblem of the French Renaissance, one of the most visually impressive castles. A palace ordered by François I. Remarkable architectural achievement. The renowned double helix staircase, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, a profusion of chimneys and sculpted capitals on the terraces.
Château de Villandry: The most beautiful Gardens in Europe, an avant-garde architectural design. Château Villandry is the last of the great Renaissance châteaux set in the heart of four levels of tiered gardens, on the banks of the Loire. Remarkable for the harmony of its architecture and its manicured gardens, the site combines aesthetics, diversity, and harmony.
The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, largest Renaissance-style monastic complex in Europe. Ancient Benedictine abbey, founded in 1101. Run by abbesses for two centuries, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Final resting place of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II of England, and Richard the Lionheart.
Inspiring.

Where cool people gather to ease it up ! We felt the happiness and well-being filling our group !
Guinguette le Quai des Brunes, île d’Offard, Quai du Marronniers, Saumur
“Guinguette is a traditional, open-air French tavern. They are typically located on riverbanks or just outside city limits, featuring simple food, drinks, string lights, and a laid-back, festive atmosphere. Guinguettes are those lively, feel-good venues.
Guinguettes first appeared in the 19th century on the banks of the rivers Seine and Marne. These festive venues were originally cabarets where people came to dine and to dance. Workers, families, and students got together for a knees-up or to cool off in the river. They are still feel-good venues where the emphasis is on music and togetherness with a bucolic atmosphere.” A fantastic time, sharing food and wine, facing the Loire River, Saumur and the Château of Saumur ! Cool, COOL evening. When you feel your soul being filled with joy ! Cheers. Le Quai des Brunes Michigan Wine School

Our travels are focused on Wine, Fine Dining, Casual local food, Camaraderie, Cooking and Experiencing the culture. This trip's additional themes were Cheeses and Châteaux ! Impossible to visit the Loire Valley without discovering these extraordinary monuments ! Amongst the 300+, Château de Chenonceau is perhaps the most beautiful and elegant: “The history of the Château de Chenonceau is defined by an almost uninterrupted succession of women who built, embellished, protected, restored and saved it for more than 500 years !” Cheers to Chenonceau !

Well, Wine and Cheese ! La Valse de l'Amour ! A romantic story to awaken our senses. Harmonie, balance, and a perfect combination are required to reach a symphony. Each partner raises by teaming-up. Pairing is a skill. Experience and tasting are key to discovering high sensations. Barbara, owner of The Cheese Lady Rochester, suggested to discover one of the top Fromager in Loire. Not a simple task, but we believe we were with one of the best of France. Thank you Omen for welcoming us in the ripening cellars. What an honor to exchange with Mr. Rodolph Le Meunier. Intense, focused and genuine: life and cheese brough Rodolph to a fantastic orchestration of his stamp. LM sticker ? Buy it ! (Fromages AND Butter !)
Rodolph Le Meunier: Affineur - Fromager 🧀 / 🇫🇷 Meilleur Ouvrier de France - World Champion 🏆 / Best Craftsman of France / Best International Cheesemonger.
