The season is here! Every year, the Cervidae family (Deer, Elk, Moose, Caribou/Reindeer) bucks and bulls grow new antlers starting in the spring. The velvet is what carries the nutrients, through blood vessels, to grow the antlers.

In the late summer to fall, the antlers stop growing and the velvet gets itchy. They rub the velvet off and thus begins the mating season, also known as rut. Watch out! The testosterone coursing through their veins causes serious roid rage!

This is Dean, our bull, who just rubbed off his velvet today!

The big indicator that the season is over is when they lose their antlers, typically in the first few weeks of December.

*Fact: female caribou and reindeer, called cows, are the ONLY females in the Cervidae family to grow antlers! They start growing in the late spring and don’t lose them until early the next spring, typically after giving birth to their calves!

Arty LOVES new potatoes…..

We’re here at Grand Mound Farmer’s and Crafter’s Market today from 10-3. We have new potatoes today, some Kennewicks, purple gold, and red potatoes I can’t remember the name of.

Basil, tomatillos, zucchini, honey from our bees, yarn from our alpacas. Hand knit items too!

Ornaments with our reindeer fiber in them, and blown our eggs from our emus.

Good morning! Today at the Grand Mound Farmer’s and Crafter’s Market: the yellow squash, zucchini, and tomatillos are new this week.

We will also have a few of our 1lb bottles of raw honey from our bees here HOPEFULLY by noon. Jarred last night and being labeled this morning!

We still have alpaca yarn available and the ornaments you see here has fur in them from the winter coats of our reindeer, Sam and Dean.

We don't want this anywhere near our reindeer. It was denied earlier this year, and then approved after they appealed. The site is less than a mile away from the ranch.

Paper petitions regarding the opposition to the lithium Batterty energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Thurston County are now available for signature at several local locations, including Highway 12 Espresso Weavers Real Estate Rochester, 's Builder Barn, 's Pizza of Rochester County Licensing Animal Clinic, The Rochester Liguor store Market Fresh Grocery and Rusty Spur.
