Freezer Roll Call!

Alright, neighbors...
It's time for a little honesty.
What's the oldest, weirdest, or most mysterious thing currently living in your freezer?
We're not talking about the ice cream.
We're talking about the stuff that's been in there so long it's started paying rent.

You know...
The plastic container labeled "leftovers" that could contain chili...or peach cobbler...or absolutely nothing you can identify.

The loaf of bread you've moved from one freezer to another through at least two presidential administrations.

Venison from a hunting season you're no longer completely sure happened in this decade.

Sweet corn you proudly froze with plans to "eat all winter."
It's July.

That one popsicle nobody wanted...and now nobody trusts.

The mystery package wrapped in freezer paper with handwriting that simply says...
"MEAT."
Very helpful, Grandma.
Or my personal favorite...

The frozen banana that was definitely going to become banana bread.
Three years ago.

Let's be honest...
At some point we've all stood in front of the freezer holding an unmarked container thinking,
"Do I throw this away...or could this be the spaghetti sauce Aunt Betty made before the eclipse?"

The Grocery List

We've never believed a grocery list is really about groceries.
It only pretends to be.
Milk.
Bread.
Butter.
Eggs.
Coffee.
Tomatoes.
On the surface, it looks like nothing more than a collection of ingredients.

But if you learn to read between the lines...
You discover something else entirely.

A bag of flour isn't just flour.
It's tomorrow morning's biscuits because the grandkids are spending the night.
A carton of eggs might become the birthday cake for a six-year-old who still believes blowing out candles can change the world.
Fresh vegetables could be Sunday's family dinner, where everyone promises they'll stay for an hour...and somehow it's dark before anyone stands up to leave.
A loaf of bread and a can of soup might be headed to a neighbor whose house has been unusually quiet this week.
Ice cream isn't always dessert.
Sometimes it's an apology.
Sometimes it's a celebration.
Sometimes it's simply proof that today was harder than anyone else realized.

We've watched people push shopping carts for a long time.
What they're really carrying isn't food.
It's anticipation.
Responsibility.
Love.
Tradition.
Memory.
Hope.
Hope that everyone will make it home for supper.
Hope that there will be enough.
Hope that the recipe still tastes like Mom's.
Hope that one ordinary Tuesday can become a memory someone carries for the rest of their life.

Maybe that's why grocery stores have always mattered more than we give them credit for.
They're one of the few places left where tomorrow begins.
Not in some grand, dramatic way.
But quietly.
One ingredient at a time.
One family at a time.
One meal at a time.

Because nobody has ever walked through our doors hoping to buy groceries.
They come here trying to gather the pieces of a life they'll build together once they get back home.

And around here...
We think that's one of the most hopeful things a person can carry.

Things We Overhear at Rock Cave IGA

Spend enough time in a small-town grocery store, and you hear some pretty wonderful things...
"I only came in for milk."
"Don't tell your mother we're buying cookies."
"Can I push the cart?"
"I know I needed something...I just can't remember what it was."
"Well...I wasn't planning on buying that!"
"Honey, do we already have ketchup?"
"I just saw three people I know, and I haven't even made it past produce!"

Around here, grocery shopping is rarely just grocery shopping. It's catching up with neighbors, sharing a laugh, and sometimes leaving with a few more stories than you came in with.

The People Who Wave

One of the things we love most about small-town life doesn't cost a thing.
It's the wave.
You know the one.
Two fingers lifted from the steering wheel.
A hand raised from the porch.
A nod across the parking lot.

Half the time, you don't even know the person's name.
And sometimes, if we're being honest, you're not entirely sure who they are.
But you wave anyway.

Not because you're certain they're your neighbor...
But because you'd rather accidentally wave at a stranger than intentionally ignore someone who might need to be seen.
There's something beautiful about that.

A wave doesn't solve the world's problems.
It doesn't change the price of gas or fix a hard day.
But for just a second, it says something we've forgotten how to say often enough:
"I see you."
"You belong here."
"I hope you're doing alright."

In a world where so many people walk past one another with their eyes fixed on a screen, a simple wave is a quiet act of humanity.
It's a reminder that kindness doesn't have to be complicated.
Sometimes it's nothing more than acknowledging another person exists.

Maybe that's one of the reasons so many of us love calling a place like this home.
We still believe people are worth noticing.
So here's our question for today...

❤️ Community Hero Monday

Every town has them.
The people who never ask for attention.
The ones who quietly show up.
They mow a neighbor's yard without being asked.
They check on an elderly friend after a storm.
They bring a meal when someone's having a hard time.
They volunteer behind the scenes.
They lend a truck, a tool, or simply a listening ear.
Most of the time, they don't want recognition.
They just believe that's what neighbors do.

🇺🇸 The Most American Thing We Know

On the Fourth of July, you'll see plenty of flags waving, parades rolling by, and fireworks lighting up the night sky.
We love every bit of it.

But around here, the most American thing we know has always looked a little different.

It's the neighbor who grills a few extra burgers... just in case someone stops by.
It's making enough potato salad to feed twice as many people as you invited.
It's sending your kids across the yard to ask the new neighbors if they'd like to come eat.
It's checking to make sure Grandma got her plate first.
It's asking, "Did everybody get enough?"
It's wrapping up leftovers for someone to take home.

In small towns like ours, hospitality isn't something special we do on holidays.
It's simply who we are.

The most American thing we've ever witnessed wasn't on television.
It wasn't a parade.
It wasn't even the fireworks.
It was somebody looking around a crowded table, scooting their chair over just a little, and saying...
"Pull up another chair."
