Fresh straw and water for everyone this morning! Even the old girls came out to forage and play in the straw… one group of chickens said no thanks and have yet to come out. The ducks are loving it and seemed to play in the snow but are enjoying the fresh warm straw as well.

Finger crossed the water heaters don’t trip the breaker all day again. We had to pull waterers last night as we couldn’t guarantee they wouldn’t pop the breaker and freeze overnight.

We’ve got our first run in with bumblefoot. I don’t know if it’s living in town or just a wonky batch of chickens but we have been struggling with these youngest ones. Two of them, including the one we have been healing a hurt wing on, have it on their feet. Thank goodness for YouTube videos and I think we’ve got it handled and caught it soon enough!

Enjoy this adorable pic of our sweetest one enjoying an epsom salt foot soak. C**t hand fed her the whole time she was soaking and she just sat and enjoyed the attention.

One of our older girls, the maran, stopped laying when the weather got really hot. She was waddling funny in the yard and we watched her lay this little squishy guy.

It’s not the prettiest home but it’ll keep these little tiny babies safe and dry until they’re old enough to fly off. Their mom decided our unfinished bathroom wall was a perfect place for her and her eggs. But with the spray insulation being done tomorrow, they needed to move elsewhere. They’re just outside the wall where they were so mom should find them easily. And the whole don’t touch or the mom won’t take them back is a myth, so we’re hopeful they should be okay.

C**t picked out 3 of the little eggs for his breakfast this morning. You can see in the pan pic the size difference between a mature hen and a younger one.
