A Love Letter — and a Gentle Warning — from a Lifelong Muppet Protector 🐸💚

Let me start by saying this clearly, because it matters:

This was not a bad show.
It was a loving show.
It was a trying-to-do-the-right-thing show.

And that’s exactly why the parts that didn’t work stand out — because the heart was absolutely there.

What we saw tonight felt like a reunion that wanted everyone invited. Every character, every reference, every wink to the past — even the Mahna Mahna twins hanging out in the background like a quiet “don’t worry, we remembered them too.” And as a fan? I noticed. I appreciated it. I smiled.

But appreciation and ex*****on are two different things.

The biggest issue wasn’t writing, talent, or respect for the legacy.
It was time — and how little of it they were actually given.

Back in the days of The Muppet Show, a half-hour meant real time. Fewer commercials. More room to breathe. Sketches had flow. Chaos felt musical instead of frantic. Even when the show was “rushed,” it never felt rushed — because there was space between the jokes, space for reaction, space for Kermit to pause, sigh, and ground the madness.

On February 4th 2026, Modern TV took that space away.

Between heavy commercial load and a modern broadcast pace, what used to be 22–24 minutes of content is now closer to 16–18. That’s not a small trim — that’s losing a full third of the show’s oxygen. And the Muppets need oxygen. They live in timing, silence, overlap, and breath.

So instead of trimming characters, the show trimmed air.

The result was a lovingly overstuffed episode — everyone shoved in somewhere, sometimes literally in the background — all competing for moments that used to unfold naturally.

Now, the good — because there was plenty.

Muppet Labs with Bunsen and Beaker? That worked. The timing, the chaos, the chemistry — intact.
Gonzo? Still weird, existential, and perfect.
The adult jokes tucked just under the surface? Exactly right. The kind that make adults laugh and kids miss them entirely — classic Muppet DNA.

Even the guest star choice made sense. Maybe not legacy-huge, but clearly chosen to reach a younger audience, and that’s OK. The intent was thoughtful, not careless.

And musically? There were bright spots. Kermit’s boat number with the guest star was, honestly, his best moment of the entire show — because when Kermit sings, he’s allowed to feel instead of rush. That moment reminded me why he matters.

Which brings me to the hardest part to say — but the most important.

Kermit felt… off.

Not wrong. Not disrespected. Just flattened.

Everyone else sounded like themselves because they’re character-forward voices. Kermit is different. He is soul-forward. He’s timing. Hesitation. Listening. He’s the moral center holding chaos together with quiet patience.

Tonight, that quiet was missing.

The delivery felt rushed, the pauses were gone, and the subtle warmth — the thing that makes Kermit feel like the audience’s guide through madness — didn’t fully land. The show even seemed to acknowledge it in the final act, breaking the fourth wall with a “we’re a little rusty” moment that felt less like a joke and more like an apology.

And honestly? I felt that apology.

Even technically, there were moments where the magic slipped. A brief animatronic stiffness — especially in a physical gag involving scale and movement — broke the illusion just enough to be noticed. Not unforgivable, but noticeable. In the old days, they’d reshoot until it felt alive. Tonight felt like they didn’t have that luxury.

The finale — yes, it worked emotionally. Bringing everyone out, revealing the Electric Mayhem, ending on a communal high — that was the right instinct. It reminded us who these characters are together. But it also felt like emotional duct tape holding together an episode that needed more room than it was given.

Here’s the truth, from someone who loves these characters deeply:

This show didn’t fail.
The format failed it.

This should’ve been an hour. Or two episodes. Or given streaming space where commercials don’t eat the soul of the thing. The Muppets aren’t meant to sprint — they’re meant to jam.

What I saw tonight was a team trying — genuinely trying — to give Kermit his soul back after years of dilution. They’re close. Very close. But to get there, they need to slow down, trust silence, and let the frog listen again.

Because Kermit isn’t just another character.

He’s the heart.
And when the heart doesn’t get enough time to beat, everyone feels it — even if they can’t explain why.

I’ll be watching.
I’m rooting for them.
And I’ll protect that green felt soul every step of the way. 🐸💚
