Mushrooms!🍄

They aren't really plants…

They are types of fungi that have a "plantlike" form - with a stem and cap (they have cell walls as well).

This is really just the "flower or fruit" of the mushroom - the reproductive part which disperses the spores.

The larger portion of many fungi (called fungi strands) are underground, and can be ACRES in size! They run like an underground highway that transport nutrients from one place to another.

The underground part of the fungi uses enzymes to "digest" other substances that it can use as food.

Mushrooms and other fungi often grow in association with plants - perhaps attaching to the side of a tree, or growing out of a dead log as it decays.

They are so important in helping to "recycle" nutrients and break down dead plant materials.

So next time you see a mushroom remember that it is just a sign of an amazing underground system below it. 🍄

THIS IS SO COOL Y’ALL!!

Our kennebec potatoes are just reaching their harvest point and I noticed one of the plants had been dug up a bit by a critter so I went ahead and harvested it.

These are growing in our no-till garden beds and hilled with a layer of old chick brooder bedding.

A few minutes of harvesting and SEVENTEEN good size potatoes 🥔 later I was in the house with a final weight of 5 lbs off that ONE plant!🤩

To understand the context of this, our area expects an average of 1.5 - 2 lbs per plant or an 8:1 - 10:1 ratio (plant one harvest 8 tubers).

Y’all, I struggled for years to grow potatoes in the south, but I kept trying and researching and failing and trying again and during the last three years with God’s help we have succeeded! 🎉

This is also a great example of how focusing on stewarding a small space with very high standards will yield a larger harvest than if you had a large garden that is too much to handle and w**d.

Had the opportunity to volunteer with Redeeming the Dirt for their 5 day training and a two day class at Tuskegee College! Compost making, garden design, sharing Jesus through Ag, touring community and church gardens and wonderful fellowship!!

If you are interested in this kind of event we will be offering a gardening class here in GA soon!!

FARM UPDATE:

Our family has been offering farm products to the Rock Spring, Dalton and Chattanooga area for the past eight years and have enjoyed serving our members with nutritious produce and meats. With shifting responsibilities and interests we feel it is time to take a break from offering our produce boxes and the Build A Box program. We may begin offering these programs again in the future, but we feel this is the best choice for the short term.

Reformation Farms will still be hosting annual farm classes and posting educational material here on the farm page!
