“And you will realize the greatest gift is getting to be a farm kid.”
What is it like to be a farmer’s daughter, or son? To wear the label of “farm kid”? Being one myself, I can tell you it changes throughout your life time.
Your first memories will be of cows and tractors. You will know the sweet smell of the milk the calf eagerly drinks, the softness of their hair as you push your face into their necks and the roughness of their tongues as they mistake your fingers for ni***es. You will know the smell of diesel fuel and soil, often as it’s owned combined fragrance and be able to recall the vibration of the tractor seat you share with your dad while he lets you steer. There will be memories of tires on plastic as you “help” cover the silage pile. Meals brought to fields. The first time you see a calf be born. You will wonder why everyone doesn’t have a cow in their yard or a tractor in their driveway. The early years will be full of all that is special about being a farm kid.
And then you will realize the sacrifice that comes from your family’s chosen profession. You will notice your dad (or mom) doesn’t always make it to dinner, games or Christmas morning. You will notice the hushed conversations of adults talking about things like weather, milk prices, fuel prices and other bills and feel the worry. Because you are a teenager the sacrifice will be a burden and may breed resentment, even in the most resilient of farm kids. Who wants to toss hay on a warm summer day when their friends are at the lake? Who wants to try to hide the smell of cow manure with perfume or cologne because they had to work before they went to the basketball game with their friends? Why can’t their parents just leave the barn and not worry about a sick cow, whether the rain is coming, the payment that is due?
But then something magical will happen. You will be able to see all the farm gave you, all the experiences that are unique only to farm kids. You will hear the compliments on your work ethic in school, in sports, in 4H. You will see the farm through the eyes of visitors, friends, teachers and hear their astonishment at what your family does, see the excitement for the cows and tractors. You will find other farm kids and compare stories, realizing that you are not alone. You will be able to listen to the tough conversations and know the stories of how your family business survived the hard times. You will work beside grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings. You will share the laughter and the tears. And even if you don’t make the farm your full time occupation, even if the farm is no longer there, your heart will still be that of a farm kid. It will swell with a love and pride that only a farm kid knows when you talk of your days doing chores, of your time spent with family, of the precious lessons learned that shaped you into the person you are today. And you will realize the greatest gift is getting to be a farm kid.

We travel with tractors on the road too, and the recklessness with which drivers pass just gets worse. Please slow down. Please don’t pass farm equipment unless you can do so safely. Your food supply depends on it!
Today we were passed on double line corner. The oncoming car had to break and pull over.
People constantly try to get between me and that tractor.
Lights. Signs. Hazzard lights. Arms waving. Driving over the white line. Pulling over when there is room.
Nothing seems to matter when people are inconvenienced by our presence.
That man right there is my entire world. I have zero intentions of doing life without him.
If there was another way for us to get equipment between our two farms, trust me, we would do it. But there isn't...
So let me make something very clear, I will do whatever it takes to keep him safe. So don't for one second think I won't use my own vehicle to shield him from you.
I am so done. So done people being in such a hurry they are willing to risk other people's lives...

IT’S BACK & it’s soooo good! Green grass is a dead giveaway that this photo is a throwback, all the way to 2015, but our yogurt is back! Thank you to all who have patiently (or impatiently) waited this long! It’s smooth, creamy, just-tangy-enough real dairy deliciousness loaded with gut boosting probiotics. We let it culture in the cup so that the 100% grassfed butterfat layer rises to the top. We’ll have it this weekend, or stop in at the farm store in Rock Stream! the first one’s for you!

What we all wish we were doing today...hiding in a cozy spot away from the bitter cold & wind (real feel 1F)! But instead we’re fighting our way through the daily animal care, dealing with frozen everything from water to tractor parts. Two weeks of warm & mud reverting to this level of cold is rough on the animals, the people and the equipment. Have to remember each day is temporary.

Cheers to new beginnings! And yes, I took this pic today in our pasture in the where it was 53 degrees. Farm life has been a struggle with all the mud & the huge temp swings but these dandy lions made me smile today! Do what you can with what you have!

This new peanut greeted me when I came to check cows at midnight! Her momma had her all licked dry and filled her belly! Super 😎 that she’s a heifer (girl) and polled, which means naturally hornless. The blue on her mouth is an oral vaccine that we use to give immediate protection against ecoli and other infections. We’re in for a rare winter baby boom- we usually try to avoid calving in bad weather but it didn’t work out that way this year - so wish these babies & us luck & stay tuned! We love when our momma cows do their part to get their babies off to a great start!

Roseanna is hands down the leader of the herd; even on days like today when it’s driving rain, she’s the first one to pasture. Her momma Rosabella was the same, and so was her grandma Rose, one of our founding herd matriarchs. Every cow herd has a pecking order, which apparently has a genetic component. Quick jaunt up to Crosswinds Farm & Creamery to pick up 10 gallons of milk. Did you know that we use their non-homogenized milk in our lattes and other coffee drinks? Gallons are also available for sale in our fridge. You could also run up to Rock Stream and get it directly from the creamery and get some ice cream in the process, or find Sarah at a number of farmers markets--including Trumansburg Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Sampson Farmers Market on Fridays.
We like local stuff, so we were happy to find a steady source for local milk! We now offer gallons and half gallons of grassfed, pasteurized, non-homogenized whole milk from Crosswinds Farm & Creamery in Rock Stream for sale in the cooler, and we steam it for our lattes. Pint-sized bottles of mint or chocolate flavored milk are available in our beverage cooler as well.
(Note: this is non-homogenized whole milk, so some milkfat solids will float around in it. This is normal and does not mean the milk is spoiled)
