Even with the heat our garden has been putting on a show lately. Last night we feasted on beets, cucumber and fresh herb salad, and a strawberry and rhubarb crumble, all from our garden!

Proof we do all make it in front of the camera and we clean up okay sometimes. Charlie had all her princess dreams come true as a flower girl today for Jessie and “Jovis”. An absolutely beautiful joy-filled day and my heart is bursting with love and pride for our dear dear friend Jessie Lee and thank you thank you Katie for picking up your phone to take our photo.

When we’re away from the farm we’re so lucky to have great neighbors who care for our animals. Islay loved her daily walks with neighbor Beth, and while we had a lovely week of sandy toes and sunshine, we’re happy to be back in our little slice of heaven.

Warm days call for picnics and feet in the creek. Was so fun seeing Charlie’s classroom with all the art they made for spring art show. She did a great job making nests and painting a self portrait. So thankful for such a special school

Babydoll sheep have been one of the most fun “accidental” additions to our farm. Our second lambing season is nearly done, with 4 new ram lambs. (Last year was all ewes) we’ve got one more mama to lamb so still hoping for a couple ewes. If you’re in the market for the cutest lawnmower ever. Let us know!

Waffles gave us a scare a couple weeks ago, disappearing for over a day right when the big snow storm hit. She ambled home as the snow fell down and then earlier this week, went off again to have twin ram lambs. As sometimes happens, she’s bonded more with one than the other, so the sweet little black lamb is going to a new home tomorrow as a bottle baby. Can’t wait to see what the other ewes deliver this year! Message me if you’d like to be on our lamb wait list.

It’s been nearly week since the snow started falling. It’s still white and beautiful, but the reality is, it’s solid ice, and taking care of a farm while dealing with ice and crazy low temps is not for faint of heart. Everyday involves multiple trips hauling warm water for the sheep and chickens and ducks, slinging hay, grain, all while desperately trying to avoid ending up on your backside. The day after the snow and ice fell, my boots punched though the crust, exhausting, but now a life saver on the hills, places to carefully perch each foot (while balancing large buckets of water and bales of hay). Now on the straightaways you can Legolas along and practice your triple lutzes even, but it’s rockbridge county, straightaways are few and far between. So we slide on our bottoms; we laugh and build ice towers and try our best to avoid cabin fever. I was doing okay until today, when I was so looking forward to going into town after 8 days stuck at home; I made it halfway up our driveway and the the 4WD played up, locking me in neutral with a crying baby in the truck and a toddler expecting me at school pickup in exactly 40 minutes. After trying everything I could think of to get drive to reengage, I threw up my hands, carefully climbed out on the ice with babe in arms, and hastened back to the house to call Tim. He was teaching and then had to tour around the Board of Visitors at VMI so he couldn’t get away. We couldn’t find anyone available to help until some wonderful friends were able to pick her up and watch her an hour till Tim was done. He picked up pizza and we drank 2 glorious glasses of wine ending our a day early. That was my week, how was yours?

This little bear is 5 months old! Time slow down! You handled your first international trip like a pro! 2.5 weeks in England and Scotland over Christmas. You met your Uncle Ollie, Aunt Kate, and Cousin Theo. You are still the happiest smiliest baby, even during your first little cold. You loved walking around Edinburgh in Mama’s carrier, sleeping and smiling and everyone who said hello. You are blowing raspberries and babbling nonstop, we’re sure your first tooth is on its way, you’ve been staring at us eating and making us feel very guilty for not sharing our dinner, so you’ve tasted banana, apple, blueberry, and avocado so far, and chewed on a pizza crust too. You’re rolling back to front and pulling yourself up to sit. No one makes you laugh like your sister, who you adore. You still love bathtime and being outside. We cannot believe how lucky we are to have you, you complete our little family and we love you so much.
