Cozy Cochin Cottage

Cozy Cochin Cottage Beautiful mottled and blue mottled bantam cochins raised on our small hobby farm in Rockford, Michigan.

Charmed by their rounded appearance, in 2007 my husband and I started our first flock of chickens with hatchery bantam cochins in a mixture of colors. In 2012 I decided I'd like to take the next step and breed towards the APA and ABA standard, and to concentrate on Mottled and Blue Mottled Bantam Cochins. I have purchased my foundation breeding stock from experienced members of the cochin community.

Over the past couple of years our bantam cochin flock has dwindled and I am currently down to one lovely rooster that needs to be AI'd for fertile eggs, and four older hens. I will be keeping these as pets and not continuing to breed them.

This spring I will be adding some Jubilee English Orpingtons, a breed I have never kept before but am very excited about for being beautiful as well as useful for meat and eggs. Will post photos as this develops!

I haven't posted in a while, but just wanted to update that I am not breeding cochins currently and have no birds for sale. If this every changes, I will update here, thank you!

Another young male c**kerel bantam cochin in my flock. He is black split to mottled, so he carries the mottled gene but only one copy not the two to display it, so he will most likely appear fully black when mature. Hatch date was June 26. He is what I consider the awkward "teenager" stage of chick right now, so I included a photo of the father rooster, so you can see how he could turn out.

I just sold this pullet's c**kerel brother earlier today and added these three youngsters in with her so she wouldn't be alone. I guess they are still too young to enjoy a good dust bath. :D

Got the two little chicks and rabbit cage out of our living room today! I figured the three older ones can give up a little bit of their space until I am sure they will all get along, so I made a divider to go between them.

I have not done any photo updates on my cochins for a while, so here is a big one! It is supposed to be in the 90's here starting Sunday, so I will put up my dark green shade cloth on the back coops later today. My large green coop has a big maple tree over top that shades it for most of the day, but the three coops behind the garage get pretty hot in the summer without the shade cloth there.

I have some extra chicken feeders and waterers I need to clear out. They are all in great shape structurally. The waterers were only used for one winter and just have a bit of water deposit on them from our hard water that could probably be taken off with some vinegar and a scrub brush. They were dusty from being stored in our garage, so I just gave them all a quick rinse and scrub. Feeders are missing the pins on the bars that go across, but I did not have any trouble with them. Just have to make sure it is scooted all the way over after filling. They were always used inside the coop, and stored on a shelf in my dry garage when not in use. All feeders and water drinking fountains are Little Giant brand and made of quality galvanized metal. Heated base works with metal water fountains and is in excellent condition. We used it during the winter and then cleaned it well and stored it in the box in our garage during the rest of the year. Prices are as follows:

12 lb Poultry Feeders (2 available): $10 each
2 Gallon Waterer: $20
3 Gallon Waterer: $25
Farm Innovators Heated Base for Metal Waterers: $35
Chick Feeder (missing top bar): Free with purchase of other supplies

Prices for individual items are FIRM, but if you buy all of it, will drop to $80 for everything. Pickup in Rockford, Michigan.

He was hatched May 9 and looks like he will have a well formed comb with the correct number of points. He carries the mottled gene (Mm) but since it is recessive and he only has a single dose of it, he will probably not show it when he gets older, other than maybe having a few white feathers. He is very friendly and hasn't started to crow yet, but I can tell he is a male by the size of his comb and wattles. I attached a photo of the parent flock he came from.

Group of bantam cochins, one c**k bird/rooster with your choice of 1-5 hens. Rooster is very sweet to people and easily handled. I purchased them last summer as young adults from a breeder in Cedar Springs so they are around a year old and laying lots. I was told their parent birds were from Matt McCammon stock, but I do not believe they breed carefully for type, so these are probably higher quality pet cochins vs ones that should be shown at APA/ABA shows. A few of them have feathers that have been plucked off from when they were broody and the other birds picked on them when they would not move off the nest box or out of the way. I have cured them all from being broody so they are all laying at the moment. Male is mottled, three females are blue split to mottled, one female black split to mottled and one female mottled. They should be able to have black, blue, mottled and blue mottled chicks.

I had an amazing time at the Ohio Nationals in Columbus this weekend. I did not show any birds, but did enjoy seeing all the cochins and purchased a beautiful trio of mottles from Matt McCammon that I will have pictures of soon. I will also post videos of all the standard and bantam cochins later this week. Here are a few photos of the show.
