Grass Lake Orchard

Grass Lake Orchard Roadside stand with honor system, pay cash into the box. $4 for every 1/4 peck bag. This Orchard was started over 100 years ago and was once much bigger.

Now, just about 100 trees and our little family taking care of it, but we are excited to bring you local apples in a simple way. Stop by the stand and grab some apples on your way home or on your way out. We cannot sell you cider out of our kitchen, but we would love to teach you how to make your own on our very own press. Email for more information or for any questions. We would also love picture

Rockford Christian students were a great help in the orchard in 2020 and in helping to shape a vision for our future in hosting school groups at the Orchard. 🥰🙌🏼🍎🍏

Something new and exciting is happening at Rockford Christian School this year. The environmental-focused preschool — 8th-grade curriculum at our campus located on Belding Road overlooking Lake Bella Vista was enhanced in August with an expanded co-curricular subject: Outdoor Education (OE). We are out of deer apple bags! We have a couple rows of trees that don’t produce apples fully and they become soft...we can pick them to feed deer, horses, pigs...if you have grain sacks, contact me and drop some off to be put to use! If you have bought from us and have a sack, we will use them again! If you want to contact me and come pick into your own containers for deer apples, let me know that too!!! Thank you for any way you can help us clear trees!

Beautiful day to pick today as we try and finish up the trees! The leaves are falling and so are the apples!

Ever wonder what makes Michigan Apples taste so great? Clear sunny days in August and September 2020 allowed for high sugar development in #MIapples. Amy Irish-Brown and other scientists with Michigan State University Extension measure brix levels (a way to measure dissolved natural sugars found in foods) in various apple varieties. They report that in 2020, brix levels were off the charts, which means this year’s crop is boasting really flavorful, sweet apples!

Rockford Christian School, our neighbors to the back...have been such a huge blessing this year! These kiddos, from young fives to the 5th and 6th graders, have helped us with every aspect of fall work in the orchard and have been the first classes among others now this year to give us a taste of education classes happening in our orchard! Love it!

Also, this evening our little family(including Chloe) picked apples and made cider...teaching all members of this family from very early on how to work the land and trees that God has blessed us with. 🥰

We are loving the school and girl scout groups that are visiting our orchard. Kendra taught first grade in Colorado when we lived there and she has loved interacting with these kids and teaching them some of what we have learned about orchard life. We talked about Gods creation of working the land and all that it provides, we talked 5 senses, some groups volunteered here to help their neighbors and we could not be more grateful for that help...all in all this time of outdoor education and work has benefited our family, our community, and we hope we made a difference in these kids’ lives too! More groups coming next week too, we can’t wait!

Macintosh trees are empty!

Macs(applesauce or eating), Northern Spy(pie or crisp or a tart snack), and Gala(eating, pie, or crisp) apples are in the stand.

1/4 peck bags are labeled for variety and are $4 each. Grocery bags hold a variety of varieties’ seconds for $6. Pay with cash in the box or Venmo at GrassLakeOrchard.

Hoping to get deer or horse feed apples out soon. We need to get a few more large bags to put them in.

Contact me if you have a press and would like to buy cider apples(enough to press a gallon) for $10.

Okay, it’s been slow going this year! We finally have a few bags in the stand! Sorting more this evening and tomorrow. I have 1/4 pecks of the best we could find on the tree for $4 each. This year they are all organic, so if you see any spots, you can cut them off and still enjoy the taste on their own, bake down the macintosh for applesauce, or use our old variety northern spy to bake a yummy pie or crisp! I can also offer bags of seconds or even bags of cider apples if anyone has an at home press they could use. Those will go for $8. Finally, we hope to get deer or horse apples out tomorrow too...those will be $10.

We have been quiet this year, but we have been busy too. We have been blessed that Kevins job has been busy and then we had a baby girl! All this to say, at the beginning of quarantine, kevin didn’t get the spray he usually has and then being busy with other things means our apples are fully organic this year.

They will still taste amazing! You can cut off any scab spots and eat. You can core, peel, and slice them to eat or bake with. We will also try to have more cider events this fall too.

Stay tuned and plan on some amazing baking apples in the stand!!! I will also be out in the orchard hand picking perfect looking apples to put in the stand as well...we will just have less perfect looking this year while still tasting like a perfect MI fall treat!

The spring weather is a bit crazy, the house projects and soon to be baby are taking up Kevin's spray and prune time, we will see how the apples turn out...but, from my point of view right now the blossoms are beautiful!

We are just a hobby farm, so we don’t have the cool tools like these and just pray we have fruit survive. Praying for all the orchards who were working hard all night keeping fires stoked and fans going.

Frost fans, or wind machines, are a popular frost mitigation choice for fruit growers in Michigan. They work by mixing the warmer air above a temperature inversion with the cold air trapped below. In this way the orchard itself stays a little warmer at tree level. Thanks Nick in West Michigan for the frost fan video! Info credit: Michigan State University Extension

Again, lots of fun making cider today, even once it started raining! We picked lots of apples before the event started so that we could press as much cider as people wanted even with the rain in the nice warm barn! Thanks to those who came out and helped pick or made their own cider, post pictures and tag the orchard please!

Here’s a couple shots I took before we got busy!

10/26/2019

Cider class is still happening today! Open house is 3-6, if you want to pick your own apples to press come early before the rain...but, we will have plenty of apples in the warm heated barn to press to your hearts content. So, come when you can and enjoy family fun here at our orchard!

Please bring your own beverage container to fill with your cider you make!

10/24/2019

Did you come last week to make cider? Available this week too? If you are free, we would love to empty our trees soon and if you are free on Saturday, we could use your help. 10/23/2019

Our Story

We are the Brubakers and we moved onto the old Grass Lake Orchard in 2014. The trees were overgrown and we just thought we would enjoy lots of apples. We soon realized that there were a lot more apples than just we could consume. We did our research and continue to learn more every year. We follow along with the spraying of the trees like that of other local orchards, however there is less spraying done and not licensed for some of the chemicals...so, you may notice some of the apples won’t be the prettiest. But, we think they taste pretty Michigan apple delicious!
