A recent Consumer Reports’ investigation has raised serious health flags after laboratory testing revealed that Doritos Nacho Cheese contains elevated levels of acrylamide and glycidyl esters. These chemical compounds are not intentional ingredients, but rather toxic byproducts that form when starchy components and vegetable oils undergo high-temperature industrial processing—compounds that, in rigorous toxicological and animal studies, have been linked to the promotion of tumor growth, cancer, organ toxicity, neurotoxicity, and cardiovascular issues.
Strikingly, these public health risks could be entirely avoided if Frito-Lay chose to invest the extra production costs required to upgrade to safer manufacturing standards. By absorbing the expense of switching to premium, low-heat refined oils and integrating standard food engineering techniques like vacuum frying, the food giant could successfully eliminate these harmful contaminants from their supply chain. Ultimately, the presence of these chemicals highlights a troubling reality where corporate cost-cutting and profit margins are prioritized over the chemical safety of everyday consumers.
