I had one of those phone calls today that reminded me that sometimes land is so much more than dirt and acreage.

I was speaking with a lady from the Athens area who is looking for some acreage where she and her family can move. During our conversation, she shared an incredible story about a piece of family land in Glascock County.

She told me the property had been in her family since the years following the Civil War.

One of her ancestors had been enslaved on a plantation. After gaining his freedom, he was able to purchase this land, land that would remain in his family for generations.

Think about that for a minute.

A man who had once been enslaved became a landowner, and more than 150 years later, his descendants still held the property he worked to acquire.

Today, the family has spread out, and because the property is in such a rural area, no one in the family really has an interest in keeping it. They ultimately made the difficult decision to sell the land to some hunters.

I hear a lot of stories in this business, but that one stuck with me.

We often look at a tract of land and see acreage, timber, creeks, road frontage, pastures, or what it might be worth.

But every once in a while, you're reminded that land can carry a family's story for generations.

Someone worked for it. Someone sacrificed for it. Families were raised on it. Memories were made there. And sometimes the history behind a piece of property is worth far more than anything you could ever put on a listing sheet.

That's one of the things I love about working with land.

Thankful to have recently closed on this early 1900s farmhouse sitting on 10.27 acres in Aragon, Georgia.
