One of our favorite things about being a small tofu company is seeing Heiwa show up in new communities across New England.

We’re excited to welcome a few new retail/restaurant partners to the Heiwa family and wanted to share:

📍 Vidalia’s Market in Beverly, Massachusetts, Vidalias, Beverly Farms
📍 Nassif Marketplace in Mansfield, Massachusetts, Nasiff Marketplace
📍 Kroka Expeditions in Marlow, New Hampshire, Kroka Expeditions
📍 Bao & Beyond in Augusta, Maine, Bao & Beyond

Every new shelf, cooler, market and menu represents people who care about supporting regional food systems, small businesses, and thoughtfully made food. We’re so grateful to partner with shops and restaurants that help connect local food producers with their communities.

If you’re near one of these locations, stop by and say hello, and maybe pick up some tofu and other local provisions for your next meal!

Thank you for helping us continue to grow throughout New England, one community at a time.

Before Heiwa Tofu was on grocery store shelves throughout New England (and beyond!), it was being made in a small garage bay and sold at local farmers markets.

Those early mornings, market conversations, and connections with customers helped shape who we are today. We value our close connection to our community- it’s part of who we are. And while a lot has changed since those humble beginnings, the values have always remained the same: supporting the same food community that supported us from the start: farmers, makers, chefs, co-ops, retailers, and neighbors who believe that local food matters. Because it does!

Every block of tofu has a story behind it, and ours begins right here in Maine. Thank you for being a part of it! 🌼

Tofu has been made for over 2,000 years, yet it’s still common to hear things like “tofu is too bland.”

It seems to be a common misconception!

But tofu is actually no more bland than bread, rice, or pasta. On its own, it’s meant to be relatively neutral: a foundation that absorbs flavor, seasoning, and sauces.

The real magic of tofu is twofold- the flavor depends on what you do with it and it’s so versatile that there is a LOT you can do with it!

For example, crispy tofu tossed in a spicy garlic glaze tastes completely different from silken tofu blended into a smoothie. Grilled tofu rubbed with herbs and spices has little in common with soft tofu simmered in a brothy soup. Because tofu is neutral just on its own, it can take on many different flavors (and textures!)

That’s why tofu has remained a staple ingredient for centuries. It’s endlessly adaptable, making itself at home in countless dishes, cuisines, and traditions around the world.

At Heiwa, one of our favorite things is seeing all the different ways people use our tofu. Sandwiches, soups, grain bowls, scrambles and even desserts. There isn’t one “right” way to eat tofu- it has many forms and all can be delicious!

What’s your favorite way to cook tofu?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again- one of the most important things to us was always being a part of the local food scene here in Maine. There’s something special about being part of Maine’s food community- farmers, educators, co-ops, chefs, and neighbors all working together to keep good food close to home.

At Heiwa Tofu, we’re proud to support local agriculture and be part of a food system rooted in care, connection, and community. Whether you pick up our tofu at your neighborhood specialty market, local co-op, farm stand, favorite restaurant, local events, our own facility or a larger grocery store like Hannaford or Whole Foods, your support contributes to the food community and small businesses alike.

Thank you for choosing local whenever you can, and for making room at the table for thoughtfully made food!!

Hello! 👋 We’re Heiwa Tofu and we’re from Midcoast Maine! We’ve been making fresh, small batch tofu since 2008 using organic soy beans that are grown by local Maine farmers. Our tofu is USDA certified organic and absolutely delicious 😋 We started making tofu because we wanted to be a part of the local food community here in Maine- both by supporting and contributing to it!

We started out very small, in a garage bay as our facility, with second hand equipment and selling at farmers markets. Thanks to our amazing community, loyal customers, hardworking team, and mentors we have grown organically over the years. You can find Heiwa Tofu in grocery stores all across Maine, New England, and in New York (Like Hannaford, and Whole Foods) and in local specialty food stores, farm stands, coops, and restaurants!
