We not only have a corn maze for you to enjoy but we can also do horse drawn wagon rides and when the snow comes we add sleigh rides.

I have to auger holes in the ground to set the 4x6 treated posts that will become the supports and frame of the new addition. Due to the drought the ground is so hard I could only go down about 6 inches. This meant I had to fill the shallow holes with water let it drain into the ground and then refill the holes a couple of times in order to soften the soil up. This worked and I was able to get to the required depth of 42 inches. It doesn’t help that the ground is primarily clay but you got to play the hand you’re dealt. Bottom line is the holes are drilled so construction can begin.

Some changes taking place on the farm in our 20th season. The Maze Building is getting a make over. We are adding a 400 square foot addition to better serve our customers and provide more room for groups coming to the farm for a sleigh ride. The first step is tearing of off the deck, addition, siding and roof which is going well so far. Not sure if that means I’m good at demolition or I did a bad job building those things. 😂

I started the Maze with a nail apron for a cash registered and no building on site. I then moved up to a deer blind size building and finally in 2010 built the current Maze building. It’s been a fun journey. Stay tuned.

This is the second of my sheep posts courtesy of John Courtney in Ireland. Once the sheep are sheared they go back out to pasture to graze. The paint stripes on the sheep identify the sheep as belonging to John and his Dad Pat (wearing the hat). John and Pat have access to common graze land on the side of the mountain adjoining the family farm. That means there could be other farmers’ sheep on the same ground hence the need for identification. (That graze land is the area behind John and his son Cathal in the photo.)

Mom, Dad, and the kid out for a stroll this morning. This is our resident Sandhill Crane family that summer here on the farm. The babies grow very fast as you can see it’s hard to tell who’s who.

It has been a week of working in the heat for the Courtneys here doing hay and those on the other side of the Atlantic in Glencar, County Kerry Ireland who are shearing their sheep. I thought you might enjoy watching John Courtney shear a sheep using hand shears. Notice how when he is done he is left with a single piece of wool. His son Cathal who’s the cameraman will pack all the wool for market. Unfortunately, the wool has little value but lamb (any sheep less than 1 year old) prices are pretty good.

Started cutting my hay today. Pretty late for first cut but just how things worked out. I was grumbling about the heat to kin in Ireland and he said he was shearing sheep today in 84 degree temps. I’ll take hay cutting over that.

We were blessed to host the Emily Cooley-Taylor Hall wedding reception yesterday here on the farm. It was a wonderful day and a great celebration of 2 wonderful young people. The fact that I know the Cooley family and watched Emily grow up in our Church made it even better. The family did a wonderful job decorating as you can see.

The latest change here on the farm is moving the pumpkin patch across the driveway to better facility irrigation. I’m leaving the hay between the rows to control weeds and to make a nice base for the pumpkins to lay on and visitors to walk on. The pumpkin plants will go in next week.

The nursery is officially open here on the farm. This SnappingTurtle is laying her eggs on the edge of this years corn maze about 200 yards from the nearest water. Turtles lay their eggs away from water to make it harder for egg eaters like raccoons to find them. I have also seen a couple of fawns and some baby rabbits in my travels around the farm.
